Throwback Thursday: Jim Henson's Pool!

Earlier this week, in what turned out to be one of our most popular posts so far, we told you that Jim Henson's former residence was for sale. 

Did the pool look familiar? 

Well, what if I told you that not only was that pool the site of many pool parties for the Henson family and friends, but that it even graced the cover of a national magazine! 

It's true!

In 2013, the Henson Company posted an entry from Jim's journal, or red book, about the pool. 

8/24/1975 – ‘Pool party.’

On July 8, 1975, construction started on a pool at the Henson home in Bedford, NY. Jim and his wife Jane enjoyed entertaining, so they were eager to invite their friends and colleagues over for a day of swimming and sunning as soon as the pool was ready. It was the kind of casual get-together that helped create comfortable connections and inspired laughter and silliness. The Hensons hosted their friends at their Bedford pool in the ensuing years, and when they spent the summer of 1978 in a house on Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles during The Muppet Movie shoot, they invited the cast and crew over to enjoy the pool there.

In 1976, the Henson's had one such pool party and many of the cast, crew, and family members of the Henson workshop were there.

Remember how I said the pool was featured on the cover of a national magazine? Here's Miss Piggy and Kermit enjoying it on the August 1-7, 1981 cover of TV Guide! 

That's one famous pool!

The Muppets Cover TVGuide!

In a tradition going back to 1970, the Muppets have once again graced the cover of TV Guide!

 The issue, on newsstands now, goes behind the scenes of their new ABC series. We'll be sure to update the post when the story is online!

TVGuide: The Muppets Will Include Lots of Celebrities and Musical Elements

When The Muppets returns to television this fall, they're recruiting a few of their famous friends to join them.

The ABC series, which follows the behind-the-scenes action of Miss Piggy's new late-night talk show, will feature a big celebrity guest star every week.

"They are the best people in all of show business," Kermit said of the show's guest stars at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. And though Kermit couldn't reveal who all the big cameos would be, Miss Piggy did say that she would welcome Reese Witherspoon to the set of her talk show Up Late with Miss Piggy. "She jumped at the chance, oddly," Kermit said.

The Muppets will also recruit popular musical acts, including Imagine Dragons, to help bring musical elements into the new mockumentary series. "There will be very top-notch singer-songwriters, performers, bands on the show and musical acts," said writer and executive producer Bob Kushell. "But the show is not a variety show. It's not about that. ... So you'll see parts of the show with bands on [Up Late with Miss Piggy], but there won't be a full act, per se."

However, bringing all these new faces to set does come with a few challenges. "Someone tried to eat Pepe the Prawn once. He was too close to craft services and got mistaken for an appetizer," Kermit revealed. "And then there's my legs. I never go to France."

In addition to trying not to be eaten, Kermit already had his hands full while trying to executive-produce his ex-girlfriend's talk show. "Piggy and I have gone our separate ways romantically. I think it's just kind of coming out in the press now," Kermit said. "It can be tough working with your ex."

"I have no problem working with my ex, okay? It's fine," Piggy said. "Dating moi is like flying close to the sun. It was inevitable that Kermit would drop down to the ground while I stayed in the heavens."

"I thought you were going to get burned," Kermit added.

The Muppets premieres Tuesday, Sept. 22 on ABC.
