RIP Jerry Lewis (1926-2017)

Jerry Lewis, legendary comedian and philanthropist has died.

Variety and various other outlets reported yesterday that Lewis died at the age of 91.

Lewis shot to fame shortly after World War II with a nightclub act that paired him with crooner Dean Martin.

Lewis was one of those old-fashioned show-business people who are increasingly scarce these days. In addition to his stand up act he wrote, directed and many mnat movies including 1963's "The Nutty Professor."

He also had a long history with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon was founded and hosted by the actor and comedian from its 1966 inception 1966 until 2011.

The Muppets made multiple appearances on the telethon over the years - usually very early in morning (or late at night depending on your perspective).

In 1980, Sesame Street Live walk-arounds of Ernie and Bert appeared, Kermit sang "Bein' Green" in 2001 and Mahna Mahna" in 2002, Johnny Fiama and Sal hosted for a bit in 2003 while Bear left the Big Blue House to sing "It's Great to Be a Bear", "The Any Way You Wanna Conga," and "The Goodbye Song."

In 2005 Johnny Fiama and Sal returned to perform their own rendition of "Bohemian Rhapsody" with Tom Bergeron with occasion appearances from Statler and Waldorf, Rizzo and Pepe hosted for three hours in 2007 which also later featured Bear as well.
