The Muppets Blitz ‘Monday Night Football’ Tonight!

Tonight Monday Night Football becomes Muppet Night Football as The Muppets take over ESPN's telecast.

ESPN's Creative Content Unit Led by Vice President Craig Lazarus and Julie McGlone, senior coordinating producer have prepared a very special holiday presentation with another Disney partner: the Muppets.

“[The CCU] can make a big splash with the tease for a game, but we’re also capable of thinking so much larger,” McGlone explained.

For instance, senior associate producer Bryan Rourke came up with the idea to title some elements Muppet Night Football, and senior managing producer Aimee Stokes suggested the team ask for more on-air real estate to create two unique pieces before the game begins. From there, the project blossomed into a full holiday-themed takeover of the night where there will be elements from the Muppets several times throughout the game.

Starting at the top of the telecast (8 p.m. ET, ESPN), Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy will make their debut in the broadcast booth while Fozzie Bear reports from the field, Statler and Waldorf join from the stands, and Animal comes in with the drums. Then, right before kickoff, the Muppets will return for a Carol of the Bells music video.

“I think they’re the best in the business,” McGlone said of her team. “To bring the Muppets to life in a pandemic was a huge challenge.

Check out a promo for the event below:

Instead of traveling to a studio, everyone set up shop at home, including the Muppets, who have become adept at having the puppeteers record themselves on green screens in their homes with help from their families.

In the midst of the shoot day, McGlone’s children popped into the guest bedroom – her work-from-home station – to say hello to their mom after getting off the bus.

On that particular day, McGlone’s son, Tommy, was wearing a Dunder Mifflin T-shirt – referencing the classic “The Office” sitcom.

Statler saw him and asked playfully, “Who’s the little one? We didn’t order any paper!”

Miss Piggy drew McGlone’s daughter, Katie, into the conversation, too, calling her by name and asking if she was a football fan.

“The Muppet crew are the kindest people, and they are so genuine with those characters and with the way they produce content, being authentic to their brand and to their show,” McGlone observed. “The Muppets have been incredible, committed partners in production from concept through every final detail in post-production with editor Justin Belcher.”

Even before this process began, she noted the CCU has always been Muppet fans.

“Who’s not a fan of the Muppets?” McGlone said. “I think they transcend generations.”

You can watch Monday Night Football Muppet Night Football tonight at 8PM on ESPN.

Dinosaurs Officially Coming To Disney+ in January!

As part of their interview with Brian Henson, Collider got some exclusive details about the making of Dinosaurs and word that's it's officially coming soon to Disney+.

Below is their extremely candid and revealing interview:
Are you excited for Dinosaurs to come to Disney+?

I am. Although up until pretty recently it was on Hulu and it has had quite a following on Hulu. I think the audience will more easily find it on Disney+, which is terrific. It sits very well on Disney+. When they were divvying up what goes where, they eventually decided Dinosaurs should be over on Disney+. I think it’ll find a bigger and new audience base on Disney+.

What emotional state do you most closely associate with your time on Dinosaurs?

Oh terror. It was bad. I was 26 and I was meant to be taking over the company. It was a scary time for sure. Not to mention because we were scuttling a merger with Disney, because when my dad died he was selling the company to Disney and for various tax reasons Disney felt like they couldn’t complete the deal. And I could appreciate their issues. It was one of those things where you added up all the variables, the deal could no longer be done and be okay for Disney and okay for our family. Then we got into a fight. But we were still trying to make Dinosaurs for Disney. In the company I was trying to silo people like, you are the ones fighting with Disney, and you are the people who love Disney and are trying to make this great show which if it fails could mean the end of our company. I had one leg in each silo, as did Michael Eisner. We’d have chats that were highly confrontational and then we’d have our chats about Dinosaurs and he was the huge proponent of Dinosaurs at Disney at ABC. So I had this schizophrenic relationship with Eisner. It was an odd time.

It was a show that benefitted from lack of experience. The way that we decided to make that series was sort of as a progression from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles we barely made with spit and polish and rubber bands. We had no money, made it super-fast, and I wanted to use that same animatronic approach to dinosaurs. Basically, there was nobody who had the experience to do what we were doing. The fact that I was 27 or so didn’t matter. I was as much of an expert as anybody else. It was nice to bring everybody together and go, “Okay, this has never been done. And now we’re going to figure out how to do it.” Michael Jacobs and Bob Young put together a fantastic writer’s room and had a fantastic approach to the writing that was so much fun. The idea that we could tell these powerful, dark stories with heavy thematic undertones but do it in these goofy, ignorant, dinosaurs are so irresponsible that they will eventually bring about their own extinction, which was the gem of the idea. That was the idea of it always. That was my dad’s idea before he died.

We had all of this incredible talent and yet as we set out to make it, we thought it was impossible. And you had to make one a week in those days because you had to keep up with the airing order. And if you fell behind the network would sue you. Because if they had to preempt you twice a month, they’d be losing all this money. So it took us three weeks to make the first one and everybody wanted to kill everybody and yet everybody understood that we were doing something that had never, ever been done before. It was hard to make in three weeks. And sure enough we made one a week.

It was very ambitious and really fun. We shot five days a week, but it was often 14 hours every day. So it could be 70 hours in five days. The Monday shooting schedule would start at 7 am and often finish at 9 pm. By Friday you would start shooting at 4 pm and finish shooting at 7 am on Saturday morning because you kept having enough time for people to sleep in between days. I could never do it now. The idea makes me nervous trying to work that hard again. I would never be able to do it again.

So many of the themes of dinosaurs, whether its fake news or the climate crisis, feel very now and now people can draw comparisons. Are you excited about that aspect of it?

Yes. There was a fan video on YouTube that is Richfield versus Trump. I kid you not. For two minutes this fan found Richfield saying something and Trump saying the same thing – building the wall and all of this stuff. It was like, “Wow, Richfield was way ahead of his time.” It’s pretty hilarious. We were ahead of our time, I guess. But we were pulling a lot of our themes from All in the Family, which was years and years before us. And even The Honeymooners before that. Yes, we were ahead of our time but isn’t it sad that we were having the same issues, not only decade after decade, but generation after generation. It’s sad.

The entire series of Dinosaurs will be available to stream on Disney+ January 29.

"Street Gang" Set for 2021!

After being delayed, Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street, will finally premiere in 2021.

The documentary takes audiences inside the minds and hearts of the “Sesame Street” creators, artists, writers and educators who together established one of the most influential and enduring children’s programs in television history.

From Warner Media's Press Release:

In the late 1960s, socially conscious media executive Joan Ganz Cooney and Sesame Workshop co-founder Lloyd Morrisett took on a revolutionary experiment: To harness the burgeoning power of television and create an educational,  impactful, and entertaining show that could reach children nationwide. Cooney recruited visionary Muppets creator Jim Henson and acclaimed children’s television writer and director Jon Stone to craft the iconic and uplifting world of “Sesame Street.”

Inspired by the civil rights movement, STREET GANG: HOW WE GOT TO SESAME STREET focuses on the first two experimental and groundbreaking decades of “Sesame Street,” highlighting this visionary “gang” that audaciously interpreted radical changes in society and engaged children in ways that entertained and educated them like never before.

HBO Documentary Films presents a Macrocosm Entertainment production, in association with the Exchange, Bondit Media Capital, and Citizen Skull Productions. It is directed by Marilyn Agrelo; produced by, Trevor Crafts, Ellen Scherer Crafts; producer, Lisa Diamond; executive producers, Brian O’Shea, Nat McCormick, Matthew Helderman, Luke Taylor, Mark Myers, Heather Kenyon; co-executive producer, Michael Davis; editor, Ben Gold.

When Love Is FOUND!

According to an upcoming BBC interview Brian Henson not only revealed that The Muppet Christmas Carol is not only being remastered, it will include the lost song “When Love is Gone”!

As you may know when the film was being first released producer Jeffrey Katzenberg said he thought the song was too "sophisticated emotionally" and therefore children wouldn't relate to it.

"So I reluctantly agreed (to remove it) because he said: 'If you say you're not going to do it, you don't have to do it', and I was like: 'Well now, darn it, I guess I will because you want me to'," Henson said.
"The agreement was we would remove it from the theatrical release but then put it back in for all of the television and video releases from then on."
The song remained in VHS copies of the film but when when it came to DVD, Disney could only find the cinematic master.

Two weeks ago, Henson received a call from Disney telling him the film was being remastered in 4K and asking him to check the new version.

He wasn't told on that call though that the lost piece of film had been found.
I was so excited. They actually hid it... so I went down and they said: 'But before we show it to you, we've got something else we want to show you'. And they put up reel four of Christmas Carol with When Love Is Gone.”
"I was like, 'No, you did not!' and they said, 'Yes we did! We found it!' I was so happy, I was so happy.

"They are all set with the full-length version again. I don't know if they are going to get it up on Disney Plus in time for Christmas because they have all these processes but it is coming back, the full-length version is coming back.
"

Whether or not Disney+ will be showing the restored movie by Christmas remains unknown.
Henson added "they can do it but they are going to have to scramble to do it in time."

The full interview can be heard in The Muppets at Christmas: It's Time To Play The Music, which will be available December 25 on BBC Radio 2.
