Elmo's World News Sesame Street Covid-19 Special!

Separately form his "Not Too Late" gig, Elmo will host a special Sesame Street episode that will air in over 13 languages across the Middle East, Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.

Below is the full press release about the special:

As families around the world adjust to new routines, special episode models playful educational activities for kids and caregivers to do together at home.
While children and families everywhere continue to feel the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, a new Sesame Street special episode from Sesame Workshop and the LEGO Foundation will bring playful learning and support in managing big feelings to viewers across the world. In Elmo’s World News, Elmo hosts a pretend news program from his bedroom, calling on Muppet correspondents and children from around the globe to share ways they’re continuing to play and learn while staying safe.
Launching this week, the 25-minute special episode will air in over 13 languages across the Middle East, Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and more as part of Sesame Workshop’s Caring for Each Other initiative. The special, which was produced with creatives and puppeteers across multiple continents, will model playful learning activities for families to do together at home and give children strategies to manage big feelings like frustration or sadness.
Weather Reporter Grover shows how he uses his imagination to “bring the outside inside” by adapting his favorite outdoor activities to create indoor fun. Special Correspondent Cookie Monster tells viewers about his “Things That Make Me Happy” box, a simple activity families can do together to practice mindfulness and gratitude with everyday objects. Reporter Raya shares a playful and interactive update on ways children around the world maintain daily routines, while the reporting team of Basma and Jad pop in with breaking news on how children are managing and expressing their “big feelings” through movement and dance.
“With so many children around the world navigating new routines, it’s more important than ever to give families the tools they need to cope with challenges and foster playful learning at home,” said Sherrie Westin, President of Social Impact and Philanthropy. “Play is critical to a child’s healthy development, and that’s especially true during times of uncertainty. Together with the LEGO Foundation, we can harness the power of play to meet the evolving needs of families everywhere and help them build the resilience that will carry them through these tough times and beyond.”
In addition to Elmo’s World News, Sesame Workshop will produce a series of short-form videos and digital activities and tips on staying healthy, learning at home through play, and caring for yourself and others. The short-form content will be released over the coming months to help families through the different challenges and transitions they experience during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Play-based education is vital for children’s psychological, emotional, and cognitive health and development, and hones the resilience they need to overcome challenges like our current reality,” said John Goodwin, CEO of the LEGO Foundation. “With more than 1.5 billion children displaced from traditional learning environments, the LEGO Foundation is committed to finding creative solutions to accelerate learning through play amid the pandemic. We are proud to collaborate with our partner, Sesame Workshop, to ensure that children have access to education and develop the critical skills needed to thrive in today’s constantly changing world, and in the future beyond the pandemic.”
The Elmo’s World News special builds on the longtime partnership between Sesame Workshop and the LEGO Foundation to bring playful learning to children and caregivers around the world. Elmo’s World News joins active Play to Learn programs in Bangladesh and the Middle East, supporting children affected by the Rohingya and Syrian refugee crises, as well as in South Africa. This initiative is part of the LEGO Foundation’s broader response to the COVID-19 crisis, providing tools, resources and content for teachers, caregivers and parents to access play-based learning activities that build children’s physical, cognitive, social, creative, and emotional skills.
Sesame Workshop’s Caring for Each Other initiative was created in response to the uncertainty facing young children and families due to the COVID-19 pandemic. SesameStreet.org/caring is regularly updated to meet the needs of families as the situation evolves, with resources designed to help parents provide comfort and manage anxiety, as well as help with creating routines, fostering playful learning at home, and staying physically and mentally healthy.

While no exact release date has been announced, we'll keep you posted as to when you can watch the Elmo’s World News special.

The Dark Crystal Bestiary Coming This Fall!

Insight Editions will offer Dark Crystal fans a look at the creatures that inhabit the world of Thra, in this fall's The Dark Crystal Bestiary.

The book will draw from not only what we've seen in movie and the Netflix prequel, but all the worldbuilding that's continued in the comics and short stories.

These stories will further flesh out Thra's long history, and the ages-old tussle between the Skeksis and the Mystics.

Here’s what the book has to say about the Ursen the Monk, who’s only previously been mentioned in tie-ins about the history of the urRu:
Little is know about urSen the Monk, but that alone demonstrates the unassuming nature of his life. Shortly after the urRu exiled themselves to the Valley of the Mystics, urSen sought further seclusion, moving to a cave on the region’s outskirts. According to urSol the Chanter, it was possible that urSen had witnessed a premonition of his own death and spent the last hundred trine of his life quietly contemplating his impending fate.

Below are few sample pages about the Gelflings, Landstriders, Nurloc, and more.

Below is book's official description:

The Dark Crystal Bestiary is an immersive in-world guide that brings to life the world of Thra and its incredible creatures.
The Dark Crystal Bestiary is the definitive in-depth exploration of the flora and fauna found in the world of Thra. Created by Jim Henson for his 1982 puppet masterpiece, Thra is a remarkable realm in which all living things are connected and the lines between animal, vegetable, and mineral are blurred—rocks can sing and trees can walk! For the first time, this deluxe volume delves into the many creatures, plants, and beings created for the Dark Crystal universe, from the original film through to the expanded universe of novels and comics, and Netflix’s TV series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Filled with beautiful illustrations of the many specimens, each accompanied by in-world commentary on their unique biology, The Dark Crystal Bestiary is the ultimate guide to the world of Thra and its inhabitants.

The Dark Crystal Bestiary: The Definitive Guide to the Creatures of Thra is set to hit shelves on October 13, and is available to preorder now from Amazon.

Fraggle Rock Movie Off Again!

Looks like with Apple TV’s announcement of a new Fraggle Rock series the on again/off again Fraggle Rock movie is now once again off.

In a recent interview with Variety, Joseph Gordon Levitt revealed that the movie is no longer in the works.

You were attached to a Fraggle Rock movie for years. Will that still happen?
No, they did a show with Apple, which I haven’t seen but look forward to checking it out. There’s so many projects that are in development. Some get into the press for some reason and some don’t. We all spend lots and lots of time working on lots and lots of things that don’t become real. This was one of those.
If we've learned anything from Fraggle Rock it's "You cannot leave the magic." Maybe someday we'll see a Fraggle Rock movie, and maybe Joseph Gordon Levitt will find his way to a Fraggle cave in another way.

Our friends over at ToughPigs.com have started the "Muppet Fans Doing Good" a campaign/contest/raffle to "help raise funds for some organizations that we strongly believe are at the forefront of helping change this world for the better."

While most Muppet fans understand the lessons Jim Henson and his colleagues taught us about equality, kindness, and justice, it's sad to see some that claim to be Henson fans still miss the point so badly.

In solidarity with the virtues Jim Henson's creations exemplified, we're proud to join with ToughPigs and The Muppet Mindset in spreading awareness and helping organizations defend the rights of black, trans and non-binary people, and overall stand up for what’s right.

We’re asking you to help donate your money, and in exchange, you’ll be entered to win one of several incredible prizes.

Here’s how it works:

  • You donate to one of the organizations below:
    • NAACP Legal Defense Fund – A leading United States civil rights organization and law firm
    • ACLU – Nonprofit to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States
    • The Okra Project – Bringing meals to Black Trans people experiencing homelessness
    • The Loveland Foundation – Providing mental health resources to women of color
    • Color of Change – The nation’s largest online racial justice organization

  • Forward the original confirmation email to contest@toughpigs.com
  • For every $20 you donate, you’ll be entered for one raffle “ticket”
  • On Sunday, June 28th, ToughPigs will choose the winners, who will receive an email asking them to choose their top 3 prize choices.

D23 Spotlights Muppets Now and Earth To Ned!

The latest issue of D23, Disney's fan magazine contains not one, not two, but three Henson related articles.

The cover story may be on the Walt Disney Archives, but the main draw for Muppets fans is a sneak peek at Muppets Now, the new improv Muppet series coming to Disney+.

While the article is short on details, there are a few celebrity names dropped that we should expect to see in the show including Seth Rogen, RuPaul, Taye Diggs, Aubrey Plaza, and Danny Trejo.

And we now know that the series will be split up among the following sketches: Pepe the King Prawn's game show, a cooking show with The Swedish Chef, Miss Piggy's lifestyle show, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker will show off their latest inventions, and they'll be chat segment with surprise celebrity guests.
Next is an interview with Kermit and Miss Piggy, where a few more Muppets Now secrets are spilled, including some celebrity guests (which we've included in the last above).

The issue also has a look at the new Henson Company talk show, Earth To Ned also coming to Disney+.

The premise revolves around Ned and his lieutenant Cornelius who were sent to Earth to plan an invasion but instead become obsessed with popular culture.

Ned creates a talk show to interview celebrities in order to out more about Earth while he tries to decide whether or not to destroy it. You know, just like Jimmy Fallon.

While Earth To Ned doesn't have a launch date yet, the issue says we should expect it sometime this fall.

Thankfully we don't have to wait as long for Muppets Now as the series will premiere July 31st on Disney+!
