He got his start on the stage, with a breakout Tony winning role in The Great White Hope on Broadway and reprising it for the 1971 film (earning an Oscar-nomination) and won a second Tony for Fences.
As prolific as Jones' career was he continually made time for Sesame Street as one of his acting teachers was Will Lee who later played Mr. Hooper.
Jones is considered to Sesame Street 's first celebrity guest reciting the alphabet
in inserts originally made for the unaired test pilot and subsequently reused in many episodes.
In 1978, Jones appeared on Sesame Street as a movie star in search of the perfect egg cream.
Jones also hosted the 10th anniversary Sesame Street special "A Walking Tour of Sesame Street",
and taped a "My Favorite Sesame Street Moment" for the show's 35 season.
“My favorite Sesame Street moment was sitting in Matt Robison's office when they were first putting the show together, and he had asked me to come and do something on it. And I said, "I will, *but* I gotta warn you, the Cookie Monster and the Muppet characters will not work, because they'll terrify children." What did I know.”
Jones also contributed a "Chilean Sea Bass" recipe for Miss Piggy's "In the Kitchen with Miss Piggy" cookbook and supplied the voice of the Mountain King in the Creature Shop's 1999 TV-movie Merlin.
