Rare Clip: Jim Henson Promoting The Muppet Show on Jonny Carson!

The Johnny Carson YouTube channel uploaded a rare clip of Jim Henson and The Muppets promoting The Muppet Show.

Typically, we'd save something like this for our Rare Muppet Clip series but it's just too good not to share by itself. 

The appearance is from September 14, 1976, which was only a week after the The Muppet Show premiered in the US. 

When The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence, The Muppet Show's second pilot, premiered March 19, 1975, it wasn't a huge hit. However, Johnny Carson's Tonight Show was appointment television, so this was likely many people's first introduction to characters such as the Swedish Chef and Fozzie Bear. 

There's even a even more behind the scenes look at the musical number "Rag Mop" which was reused in 1981's of Muppets and Men: The Making of The Muppet Show, but again this was most peoples first look at how Muppet magic comes to life.

The Muppet Show Danny Kaye original ATV UK ending (1978):

The Muppet Show with Danny Kaye originally aired in the UK on Christmas Day December 25, 1978. The original ending includes a different Statler and Waldorf box gag singing ''We Wish You a Merry Christmas'' with Kermit and the gang joining along with the song.

The UK version also includes Kermit and Fozzie (portrayed as Santa Frog and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reinbear) promoting a James Bond film ''Diamonds Are Forever'' and a Morecombe and Wise Christmas Special that aired next in selected ITV regions.

Edward Eyth, who storyboarded and composed the music, posted the the following on social media about the shoot:  

When Missy Piggy launched her signature fragrance “Moi” marketing needed a promo video to loop on monitors in Bloomingdale's NY city store. The concept was to parody the fragrance commercials that were in fashion at the time (Calvin Klein, Guess, etc). Extremely tight deadline, Craig Shemin did writing, Jason Bielski shot & edited, I generated design/storyboards, and stayed up till 3 AM composing music for the clip. Miss Piggy was pleased, and the video aired on the Tonight Show during her appearance to promote the perfume. Another of many great memories, working with the Jim Henson Company.

Rare Muppet Clips Book 2 Vol 2 & 3: Muppets Tonight!

Muppets Tonight recently celebrated its 25th Anniversary and with the series still not widely  available, today we have an all Muppets Tonight edition of ...

After debuting on The Jim Henson Hour, Clifford got a slight personality change and became Muppets Tonight's host. Here he is promoting the series on Sinbad's short-lived talk show Vibe.

      

Newer fan favorites Pepe the King Prawn, and Bobo the Bear got their start on the short lived ABC/ Disney Channel series.

Pepe originally operated the elevator with Seymour the elephant, before taking the stage and then ultimately becoming a solo artist.

Bobo maned (beared?) the security desk, where he often wouldn't let guests in:

But, when he fell in love with Cindy Crawford, Bobo got to sing "I'm a Believer" with Mickey Dolenz:

  

The series also introduced us to Johnny Fiama and Sal:

Muppets Tonight not only updated Pigs in Space (Pigs in Space Deep Dish nine), it also spoofed shows like BayWatch, Tales from Crypt, ER, and The Real World.

Just like The Muppet Show, Muppets Tonight had segments only shown in the UK.

Many of these skits featured Muppet Treasure Island's Clueless Morgan and Polly Lobster talking with "Mr Callahan."

Classic Muppets like Miss Piggy also appeared in handful of episodes. Here is Miss Piggy & Billy Crystal spoofing "When Harry Met Sally"'s famous deli scene:

    

And of course Kermt was there, serving as executive producer, but he also got to perform The Talking Heads' "Once in a Lifetime" as well.

  

Here's hoping Muppet Tonight gets a proper release on Disney+ soon, so these and many more clips will no longer be considered rare.

Rare Trash From Jim Henson!

A rare video of Jim Henson and the Muppets surfaced on YouTube yesterday. 

The video features Muppet trash and was part of the 1973 TV special Keep U. S. Beautiful.

According to the Muppet Wiki: 

Keep U. S. Beautiful was a comedy-variety special with an anti-pollution/litter theme, which debuted over NBC on March 27, 1973. Hosted by Raymond Burr, the special was divided into a series of sketches, with celebrity performers
