'Sesame Street' sues 'SeaWorld' over mishandling brand, unpaid royalties!

Sesame Place and the Sesame Street Lands at SeaWorld parks days be be numbered.
Yesterday, in New York court Sesame Workshop sued SeaWorld to end their decades-long relationship, accusing the theme ‌park operator of withholding royalties and undermining the "Sesame Street" brand.

SeaWorld, a unit of United Parks & Resorts, has been Sesame's exclusive U.S. theme park licensee for 45 years, opening several "Sesame Street"-themed parks and attractions featuring characters including Big Bird, Cookie Monster and Elmo.

Sesame Workshop said SeaWorld has for a few years ignored the most recent licensing agreement, which dates from 2017, including by withholding royalties and closing sites, including the temporary closure of Sesame Place San Diego.

According to the complaint, matters worsened in September when SeaWorld stopped paying royalties to Sesame Workshop altogether, and as a pretext to end the relationship made the "preposterous" accusation that the New York-based nonprofit failed to invest in its own brand.

"SeaWorld’s rogue, retaliatory actions pose an imminent threat" to Sesame Workshop by tarnishing its reputation, using its intellectual ‌property without permission and "disappointing children and families" who hoped to visit the closed sites, the complaint said.

SeaWorld is known for the orca Shamu. A United Parks spokesperson said in a statement the Orlando, Florida-based company looked forward to "setting the record straight in court." United Parks changed its name from SeaWorld Entertainment in 2024.

The lawsuit also seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.
“United Parks & Resorts has repeatedly failed to honor its contractual obligations, leaving Sesame Workshop no choice but to pursue litigation to protect our brand and the trust that families place in it," a Sesame Workshop spokesperson said in a statement.

In September 2024, a federal judge in Orlando upheld an arbitration ruling that SeaWorld pay Sesame Workshop more than $11 million including interest for breaching their licensing agreement. SeaWorld didn't pay until October 2025, Sesame Workshop said.

"Sesame Street" Officially a Hit on Netflix!

According to a recent post by Sesame Workshop, their recent partnership with Netflix is proving to be a big hit.

Season 56 debuted as the streamer's #1 kids show in the US and regions around the world and new content from the season was streamed more than 9 million times on PBS KIDS platforms.

Below is the original post.

It’s a milestone moment for Sesame Street. Season 56 of Sesame Street debuted last week on Netflix and PBS KIDS and quickly became the #1 kids show on Netflix in the US and regions around the world. In its first week alone, Season 56 content was streamed more than 9 million times on PBS KIDS platforms.

Writer Emily Horgan underscored that this momentum reflects “deliberate, strategic endeavors to cook up the perfect footprint across the most relevant touchpoints of modern-day preschool audiences.” She further noted that Sesame Street’s approach to Roblox “offers a strong reference point for preschool brands… age-appropriate, safe, and genuinely additive for young audiences rather than purely promotional.”

From Netflix and PBS KIDS to YouTube and Roblox, thank you for your continued support as we meet kids where they are and advance our mission to help children everywhere grow smarter, stronger, and kinder.

Sesame Street Season 56 is now streaming on Netflix and PBS Kids!

Coming Soon: "Qreative Evolution" with Sesame Creative Director, Louis Henry Mitchell!

Sesame Workshop Creative Director of character design, Louis Henry Mitchell has a new book, "Qreative Evolution: How to Question Everything to Find Your Creative Fulfillment."

When he was six years old, Louis Henry Mitchell first saw Muppet creator Jim Henson and Kermit the Frog on The Ed Sullivan Show, and a spark was lit that would ultimately lead him to his position at Sesame Workshop. From his early days in comic book illustration, to entertainment design, and finally his dream job, Louis’s journey has inspired him to encourage others to follow their heart and create their life with purpose. His belief that everyone is an artist is the core principle behind Qreative Evolution. Louis shares a completely new way of looking at talent, creativity, and living our fullest potential, and gives readers the tools and support needed before the creative process even begins.

Taking lessons and practices from his own life, Louis provides encouragement and guidance to people of all types. Whether they’re writers or poets, sculptors or graphic designers, dancers or puppeteers, or even those not working in artistic fields, people—creative or otherwise—are similar in many ways, most notably in the struggles with self-doubt, how to get motivated, and how to stay energized and passionate about their creativity. Louis knows what it’s like to have the odds stacked against him at every level, but consistent support from a devoted mother taught him to ignore the negative voices and that “naysayers do not get a vote.” Through enchanting stories and wisdom gained over his successful and fulfilling career, Louis demonstrates what we can achieve when we are loyal to our creative calling, and how we continue to evolve as works of art throughout our lifetimes.

Louis Henry Mitchell is the creative director of character design at Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization behind Sesame Street, where he directs and oversees all aspects of character art. Most notably, Louis designed the character Julia, the first Sesame Street Muppet on the autism spectrum. He has been invited to speak throughout the United States as well as in the Galapagos Islands, Indonesia, Singapore, India, Jamaica, New Zealand, and Australia. Louis attended the School of Visual Arts and the Art Students League and resides in Rego Park, Queens, New York.

"Qreative Evolution" will be available August 23rd in hardcover, audio book, ebook, audio CD and MP3 from Blackstone Publishing.

"Sesame Street" Receives Grant From Elevate Prize Foundation!

The Elevate Prize Foundation awarded the characters of Sesame Street the Elevate Prize Catalyst Award for their transformative impact on generations of children through their purpose-driven storytelling.

The Elevate Prize Foundation Carolina Jayaram, CEO of the Elevate Prize Foundation; Versha Sharma,
 Editor-in-Chief of Teen Vogue (who moderated the discussion following the presentation of the award);
Ernie; Bert; Joe Deitch ,Founder of the Elevate Prize Foundation; and Sal Perez,
 Executive Producer of Sesame Street.

Given onstage to Sesame Workshop at the Foundation's Third Annual Make Good Famous Summit by its Founder Joseph Deitch and CEO Carolina García Jayaram, the award celebrates the iconic children's show and its 55-year legacy as a trusted source of educational excellence and emotional support for children worldwide, and looks to ensure its future for new generations.

The Elevate Prize Catalyst Award recognizes prominent figures who use their influence to inspire global social action. To advance their mission and scale their work, recipients receive $250,000 in unrestricted funding, as well as valuable development resources and partnership opportunities. Past recipients include Dwyane Wade, Michael J. Fox, Matt Damon, George and Amal Clooney, and Malala Yousafzai, among others.

"With 1 in 5 children facing mental health challenges, our work feels more important than ever."Post this

"On behalf of my friends at Sesame Street, I am honored to accept the Elevate Prize Catalyst Award, especially during Mental Health Awareness Month, a time when we reflect on the emotional well-being of children and families. With 1 in 5 children facing mental health challenges, our work feels more important than ever," said Sal Perez, Executive Producer of Sesame Street. "This award will help sustain Sesame Workshop's support for children and families facing some of the toughest challenges — whether that's struggling with mental health, experiencing homelessness, or having a parent who is struggling with addiction, and will support our ability to deliver on our nonprofit mission of helping children everywhere grow smarter, stronger, and kinder."

Perez also announced the start of production for the 56th season of Sesame Street, in which the beloved program will be reimagined, giving attendees of the Make Good Famous Summit a sneak peek of what's to come.

"We've always been committed to the idea of Sesame Street being a radical experiment, and that's the organizational ethos inspiring our latest season. We're reimagining the show, introducing a new format and an all-new animated segment exploring never-before-seen locations. The new structure will enable us to deliver more comedy and playability, so children can extend the experience beyond the screen by imagining themselves playing with or as their favorite Sesame Street friends. And, of course, we'll be welcoming celebrity guest stars to delight parents and caregivers," shared Perez.

Perez, together with Bert and Ernie, accepted the award during the closing session of the Make Good Famous Summit, a global gathering of activists, changemakers, storytellers, leaders, and culture-drivers that began on May 12. Held under the theme "A New Era of Impact," this year's convening encouraged attendees to challenge traditional models of philanthropy and impact and take bolder action, build community, and push for inclusive, actionable solutions to social challenges.

"We are proud to present this year's Elevate Prize Catalyst Award to Sesame Street — not just for decades of impact, but for proving that cultural storytelling is a frontline tool for global change. For over 50 years, Sesame Street has done what few institutions have: created a trusted space where children — and the adults who love them — develop empathy, resilience, and the value of belonging. At a time when disinformation, division, and mental health crises are surging worldwide, we cannot afford to lose public programs that model compassion and inclusion at scale. Without programs like Sesame Street, we risk a generation of children growing up without a shared moral compass or safe space to process the world around them. But if we protect and invest in this kind of storytelling, the upside is exponential — a society better equipped to raise informed, emotionally healthy, and socially conscious leaders," said Carolina García Jayaram, CEO of the Elevate Prize Foundation.

Breaking: "Sesame Street" and HBO Opt Not to Renew Deal!

According to the Hollywood Reporter Sesame Street and HBO have opted not to renew their deal to stream new episodes of the show.

Though the show's upcoming 55th season will be it's last on Max, the streamer will
continuing to license older episodes through 2027. It is not clear however, whether this library deal would prohibit any potential partners for new episodes from acquiring library episodes as well.

Regardless of who airs the new episodes first (Sesame Street still has a deal to air them on PBS) the show's 56th season will
drop the “magazine”-style format and lean into longer narrative-led segments. This will be paired with a new animated series "Tales From 123."

We'll keep you posted as new information develops.
