Netflix Wins “Sesame Street” Movie Rights!

Netflix won a bidding war for the feature film rights to Sesame Street, beating out Universal after Warner Bros. dropped out early.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rideback (behind Lilo & Stitch and Aladdin) will produce, leveraging an existing relationship with Sesame Workshop, which will also have a producer role. The race began about a year ago after Sesame Workshop signed with CAA. Warner Bros., which held the rights for nearly a decade without making a film, exited amid its acquisition drama.

Now that a new studio has been named, it will only be a matter of time before we find out whether this is the same, long in development, movie starring Anne Hathaway or something else entirely.

Season 56 debuted as the streamer's #1 kids show in the US and regions around the world and new content from the season was streamed more than 9 million times on PBS KIDS platforms.

It’s a milestone moment for Sesame Street. Season 56 of Sesame Street debuted last week on Netflix and PBS KIDS and quickly became the #1 kids show on Netflix in the US and regions around the world. In its first week alone, Season 56 content was streamed more than 9 million times on PBS KIDS platforms. 

Writer Emily Horgan underscored that this momentum reflects “deliberate, strategic endeavors to cook up the perfect footprint across the most relevant touchpoints of modern-day preschool audiences.” She further noted that Sesame Street’s approach to Roblox “offers a strong reference point for preschool brands… age-appropriate, safe, and genuinely additive for young audiences rather than purely promotional.”

New "Sesame Street" Holiday Special, "Elmo & Mark Rober’s Merry Giftmas" Coming to Netflix!

Netflix announced a brand new Sesame Street holiday special, Elmo & Mark Rober’s Merry Giftmas will premiere on the streamer next month. 

Elmo & Mark Rober’s Merry Giftmas features Elmo teaming up with NASA-trained engineer, Rober to make presents for a gift exchange — while learning about science and the importance of friends during the holiday season. 

At Sesame Street, we love teaming up with like-minded partners to spark curiosity and inspire playful learning,” said Kay Wilson Stallings, Executive Vice President, Chief Creative Development & Production Officer, Sesame Workshop. “Collaborating with NASA-trained engineer Mark Rober, Elmo and friends explore relatable science concepts in a festive Netflix holiday special, making an unforgettable experience for the whole family.”

“Teaming up with Elmo and the Sesame Street Muppets is pretty much a childhood dream come true and while viewers might not make a snowball throwing robot exactly like Abby and me, it’s proof that with a little imagination and creativity, you could make anything you can dream up.” said Rober.

The new season of Sesame Street is now streaming on Netflix as well as Mark Rober’s CrunchLabs, which highlights the engineer’s viral science and DIY videos.

Sesame Street’s New Reimagined Season Launches November 10 on Netflix and PBS Kids!

Sesame Street is coming to Netflix.

The highly anticipated newly reimagined Sesame Street debuts with a new season Monday, November 10, on Netflix and PBS KIDS.

Episodes will invite children to play along in new ways, bring viewers inside the world’s most famous brownstone for the first time, and feature celebrity guests, original music, engaging animation, and, as always, lots of laughter. The season premieres on “Sesame Street Day,” which celebrates the 56th anniversary of the iconic show.

Episodes, which will be available on both Netflix and PBS KIDS on the same day, will drop in three volumes and feature guest appearances by music superstar Miley Cyrus and professional race car driver and NASCAR champion Bubba Wallace. Throughout the season, Sesame Street friends will explore compassion, kindness, and social problem-solving in ways little ones can relate to — whether it’s learning to take turns, cheering up a friend, or finding ways to solve problems together. Celebrity friends will also carry on the fun in exclusive digital content throughout the season. 

“Season 56 reimagines Sesame Street, inviting children into the action and bringing them hand-in-hand through high-stakes stories, powerful learning moments, and laugh-out-loud surprises,” said Sal Perez, Executive Producer, Sesame Street. “And, as always, Sesame Street’s curriculum is designed to meet children’s most pressing needs — so our focus this season is on kindness and compassion, something we can all use more of today.”

Each episode will feature interactive, immersive, and visually engaging 11-minute stories that put young viewers at the center of the action. Featuring the beloved Muppets of Sesame Street, every narrative is designed to keep the learning going, with ways to inspire children’s play beyond the screen:  

Elmo’s Pretend: When everyday moments spark his imagination, Elmo jumps into action. Enhanced by animation overlays, children can play with Elmo through imaginative anything-can-happen storytelling.  

Cookie’s Cookie Cart: In addition to his Foodie Truck, Cookie Monster is expanding with a brand-new Cookie Cart. With delicious experiments and silly daily specials on the menu, there is bound to be cookie chaos!  

Grover’s Suity Suitcase: Grover can do just about anything, but sometimes he needs a little help from his Suity Suitcase, a silly contraption that can transform the enthusiastic monster into anything he can imagine in order to help his friends. Children can follow along through imaginative role play and experience exciting transformations alongside their fuzzy blue friend. 

Abby’s Magic Beasties: Abby’s Fairy Garden is home to new surprising and delightful magical beasties who she can identify, track, and take care of, including Bunberry who is now her closest Beastie buddy, the musical dragon triplets, and a bug that makes bubbles when it flies. Children will be able to play Abby through collecting and caring for imaginative creatures.

Ever wonder what happens behind the front door of the world’s most famous apartment building? The new five-minute animated segment Tales from 123 invites viewers in for a laugh-out-loud look at the wacky and whimsical shenanigans beyond the stoop. Led by Elmo and Tango, the action-packed segments follow fun and surprising adventures with building residents Cookie Monster, Grover, Abby, Big Bird, Bert and Ernie, fairies, animals, shapes, talking food — and everyone’s favorite apartment building superintendent, Oscar the Grouch. From the Mighty Monster Megaphone to the zany elevator and musical stairs, you never know what’s behind the door at 123 Sesame! 

The new reimagined season also includes: 

To-camera moments where characters speak directly to viewers and invite them into the action, capturing heartfelt emotions and off-the-cuff interactions. 

Animation overlays that highlight music, action, humor, and important story moments while adding visual excitement. Visual effects like wand sparkles, bubbles, and confetti will add a touch of anything-can-happen magic to the storytelling. 

This season’s curriculum is an extension of Season 55’s focus on emotional well-being. With an emphasis on helping children develop a compassionate mindset, little ones will discover how to name and manage big feelings while also learning calming strategies to support themselves and their friends.

In addition to the adventure narrative and Tales from 123, each episode will feature the return of fan-favorite segments Elmo’s World and Cookie Monster’s Foodie Truck. The first volume of episodes include:   

Elmo Runs the Race – Elmo is excited to compete in “The Sesame Street Races” but learns that his mood and his athletic performance are affected when he keeps delaying eating lunch. Meanwhile, Cookie Monster’s trying to get that neglected sandwich for himself! Special guest star Bubba Wallace joins in the fun as a sportscaster.   

Cookie Monster’s Big Puzzle – Cookie Monster has a baking puzzle to solve — a new cookie for Elmo. But Elmo isn’t hungry and gets frustrated when Cookie Monster doesn’t listen. Cookie Monster learns the importance of respecting what Elmo wants and apologizes. 

Abby’s Magical Beasties – Abby is excited to introduce her friends to the amazing, magical beasties who live in her Fairy Garden! But when one of the beasties goes missing right before sunset, Abby feels discouraged. So, she does a wand wiggle and remembers to use bright light to find Bubble Bug. Meanwhile, Cookie Monster and Grover have their hands full in caring for the other beasties in the garden. 

Grover’s Suity Suitcase – When Grover learns that Elmo is sad, he knows just what to do: he’ll become Super Grover, the super friend who will do anything to make Elmo giggle again! But when his attempts don’t work, a discouraged Grover wonders if he should just give up… until he learns that sometimes compassion means asking others how they would like to be helped.    

With the launch of this season, Sesame Street will reach more children in more places than ever before in its 56-year history. New episodes will be available in 30+ languages globally on Netflix and released on the same day on PBS stations, the PBS KIDS Channel, and across PBS KIDS digital platforms in the U.S. This unique public-private partnership enables Sesame Workshop to bring its research-based curriculum to young children around the world with Netflix’s global reach, while ensuring children in communities across the U.S. continue to have free access on PBS KIDS to the Sesame Street they love, building on the 50+ year partnership with PBS.

Over thew weekend Netflix held it's annual TUDUM fan event with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon having an unexpected encounter with Cookie Monster.

Affleck and Damon's Netlix movie The Rip will release globally January 16, 2026.

New episodes of Sesame Street will stream on Netflix and PBS Kids.

Sesame Workshop announced today that new episodes as well as library episodes of Sesame Street will be available to watch on Netflix worldwide with new episodes also being released the same day on both PBS stations and on PBS Kids.

“The support of Netflix, PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting serve as a unique public-private partnership to enable Sesame Street to continue to help children everywhere grow smarter, stronger."

Sesame Workshop released the following statement on X.

"We are excited to announce that all new Sesame Street episodes are coming to
@netflix worldwide along with library episodes, and new episodes will also release the same day on @PBSStations and @PBSKIDS platforms in the US, preserving a 50+ year relationship. The support of Netflix, PBS, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting serve as a unique public-private partnership to enable Sesame Street to continue to help children everywhere grow smarter, stronger, and kinder."

The news comes months after HBO and Max did not renew their 2016 deal. While some of the Sesame library will be available on Netflix, the majority will still be available on HBO and Max through 2027.

Watch The Henson Company's "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio" Teaser Trailer!

The first teaser trailer for Jim Henson Company's upcoming stop motion feature Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio was unveiled today. 

Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro reinvents the classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto. This whimsical, stop-motion film directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson follows the mischievous and disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world.

While no release date was announced, the teaser says the film will be released this "Holiday Season" on Netflix.

First Look at Henson/ Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio!

Netflix released the first teaser for The Jim Henson Company and Guillermo del Toro's upcoming stop motion feature Pinocchio.

"Guillermo del Toro reimagines the classic Italian tale of Pinocchio. in a stop-motion musical adventure. Follow the mischievous adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world."

The teaser below features Ewan McGregor as Sebastian J. Cricket Cricket, while the rest of the film voices includes the voice talents of David Bradley as Geppetto, and Gregory Mann as Pinocchio, while Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson Burn Gorman, Christoph Waltz, and Tilda Swinton round out the rest of the cast. 

Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio will be released in December on Netflix. 

‘The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance’ Exhibit Coming To Center For Puppetry Arts!

Puppets, props, and artifacts from The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will soon be on display at the Center For Puppetry Arts in Atlanta!

Get a behind-the-scenes look at how The Jim Henson Company recreated the fantastical inhabitants and landscapes for the Emmy Award-winning Netflix series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. 

Longtime fans and those new to puppetry will find a world to discover and appreciate in this close look at the artistry and craftsmanship behind the creation of the live-action epic.

MOMI's The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance Exhibit in NY

Atlanta radio station show City Lights spoke with the center’s museum director, Sarah Dylla, about the exhibit.

Below are a few highlights of their discussion:  

“In this exhibition, we try to give a bit of a backstory so those who are a part of that strong fan base and those who are not familiar with the story can all find something to enjoy, appreciate and learn from it. So you’ll see a lot of comparisons between the two productions — from the 1982 feature film and the 2019 series,” said Dylla.

She continued, “This project, ‘Age of Resistance,’ really is a huge undertaking and huge labor of love and artistry for a whole community of puppeteers and artists. The production included 75 sets all created to take viewers into different climates and different zones of the world of Thra. It employed 500 employs of all different types, 83 of whom were puppeteers. There were 175 puppets. So, something we wanted viewers to take away is truly the massive amount of labor and creativity that projects like this entail.”

“Something special about this exhibit is that there is a base point for comparison. It is a reboot of a story that was one of Jim Henson’s forays into creating entire fantastical worlds with puppetry and sets. In looking at those puppets and props from the 1982 film and comparing them to now, you can see how things changed, but also how the field and the process of puppetry has stayed the same. We have a section in the book where we look at the production of arms and hands on Skeksis puppets. There are a series of arms that show how the puppet builders put together the arm to be able to have it articulate and move in the right way. You can see the arm from 1982 and then you can see the arm from the more recent Netflix series.”

 
Masterpiece of Puppetry: Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will be on view at the Center For Puppetry Arts from June 18 - Oct. 31.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Canceled!

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance has come to an end as Netflix has officially canceled the series.

Variety is now confirming the rumors we heard in February that "Netflix will not be returning to the planet of Thra."

The news of the comes just after the show won an Emmy for outstanding children’s series.

“We can confirm that there will not be an additional season of ‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.’ We know fans are eager to learn how this chapter of ‘The Dark Crystal’ saga concludes and we’ll look for ways to tell that story in the future,” said executive producer Lisa Henson.

“Our company has a legacy of creating rich and complex worlds that require technical innovation, artistic excellence, and masterful storytelling. Our history also includes productions that are enduring, often finding and growing their audience over time and proving again and again that fantasy and science fiction genres reflect eternal messages and truths that are always relevant. We are so grateful to Netflix for trusting us to realize this ambitious series; we are deeply proud of our work on ‘Age of Resistance,’ and the acclaim it has received from fans, critics and our peers, most recently receiving an Emmy for Outstanding Children’s Program.”

This follows Netflix cancelling their previous Henson collaboration The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell after one season as well.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance has won its first award!

The netflix prequel won Outstanding Special (Practical) Effects in a Photoreal or Animated Project at the Visual Effects Society Awards awards this week.

Toby Froud accepted the award in the brand new category for the team that included himself along with Sean Mathiesen, Jon Savage, and Phil Harvey for the episode "She Knows All the Secrets."

Sulé Bryan, Charles Chorein, Christian Waite, Martyn Hawkins were also nominated for their work creating The Endless Forest in the Created Environment in an Episode, Commercial, or Real-Time Project category, but lost to Game of Thrones.

It's one of my favorite Netflix Originals so far, ranking way up there with Altered Carbon, GLOW, Mindhunter and Stranger Things. It never would have happened if not for Netflix, and I'm hoping that Netflix realizes this and orders another season... one of the best modern fantasies ever made for the small screen."

As you can see, while most reviews have been glowing, there are few that didn't quite think it's story measured up to it technical achievement

"Understand: The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is never anything less than impressive: It's beautiful to sit and gawp at, and its narrative, compared to that of the film, is more satisfyingly detailed and nuanced. But in entrusting so much of the story to puppets incapable of adequately executing its emotional demands, the series winds up feeling strangely empty."

Josh Bell, CBR:
"Age of Resistance is like the Star Wars prequels of the Dark Crystal universe, filling in gaps that didn't need to be filled in, and focusing heavily on political machinations among rival factions. There's even a subplot about tariffs."

Ed Power, The Telegraph:

"The puppetry, as might be expected of the Jim Henson Company, is exquisite and, in this era of oppressive CGI, wonderfully tactile. Alas, the story and dialogue are convoluted with a vengeance."

The consensus though is that The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is good and worth your time. 

It currently has and 87% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a audience score of ... 100%!

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Soundtracks!

Yes, you read that headline correctly The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is getting not one, but two soundtrack albums. 

Volume 1 features selections of the original music from the show composed by Golden Globe and Emmy Award nominee Daniel Pemberton (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Steve Jobs, Ocean’s 8, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.).

Volume 2 features music by Pemberton and Samuel Sim (Awake, The Halcyon, Home Fires).

While CD and vinyl versions are in the works, both albums will first be released digitally on  August 30.
