‘The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance’ Exhibit Coming To Center For Puppetry Arts!

Puppets, props, and artifacts from The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will soon be on display at the Center For Puppetry Arts in Atlanta!

Get a behind-the-scenes look at how The Jim Henson Company recreated the fantastical inhabitants and landscapes for the Emmy Award-winning Netflix series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

Longtime fans and those new to puppetry will find a world to discover and appreciate in this close look at the artistry and craftsmanship behind the creation of the live-action epic.

MOMI's The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance Exhibit in NY

Atlanta radio station show City Lights spoke with the center’s museum director, Sarah Dylla, about the exhibit.

Below are a few highlights of their discussion:

“In this exhibition, we try to give a bit of a backstory so those who are a part of that strong fan base and those who are not familiar with the story can all find something to enjoy, appreciate and learn from it. So you’ll see a lot of comparisons between the two productions — from the 1982 feature film and the 2019 series,” said Dylla.

She continued, “This project, ‘Age of Resistance,’ really is a huge undertaking and huge labor of love and artistry for a whole community of puppeteers and artists. The production included 75 sets all created to take viewers into different climates and different zones of the world of Thra. It employed 500 employs of all different types, 83 of whom were puppeteers. There were 175 puppets. So, something we wanted viewers to take away is truly the massive amount of labor and creativity that projects like this entail.”

“Something special about this exhibit is that there is a base point for comparison. It is a reboot of a story that was one of Jim Henson’s forays into creating entire fantastical worlds with puppetry and sets. In looking at those puppets and props from the 1982 film and comparing them to now, you can see how things changed, but also how the field and the process of puppetry has stayed the same. We have a section in the book where we look at the production of arms and hands on Skeksis puppets. There are a series of arms that show how the puppet builders put together the arm to be able to have it articulate and move in the right way. You can see the arm from 1982 and then you can see the arm from the more recent Netflix series.”

Masterpiece of Puppetry: Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will be on view at the Center For Puppetry Arts from June 18 - Oct. 31.

Center for Puppetry Arts Virtual “Call to Auction”!

The Center for Puppetry Arts announced that it will move its annual silent auction to become a virtual online event in 2021.

The Center’s “Call to Auction” will take place from May 4-6 and will feature rare puppet memorabilia and collectibles, jewelry, art, vacation packages, one-of-a-kind experiences and more. The event and its proceeds will help expand the Center’s overall digital outreach and generate additional funding and support for their missionto inspire imagination, education and community through the global art of puppetry.

Headlining the unique items up for auction are three authentic, production props used in the Emmy Award-winning Netflix Original series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Maudra Fara’s axe, Augra’s observatory book, and a chrysalis featured on set are distinctive, hand-made works of art from the production. The owner of the prop will also receive a virtual visit with a lead puppeteer who worked on this epic production. It’s an opportunity to learn first-hand how the characters and world were brought to life and what it was like to be a part of this groundbreaking series.

Other Henson packages include a private tour of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop in New York City and a Fraggle Rock Doozertube Fan Date. On the Creature Shop tour, guests will see first-hand where some of the world’s most iconic characters are created. The tour also includes unique access to The Jim Henson Company archives with Karen Falk, Director of Archives. The final stop is lunch with Jim Henson’s daughter, Cheryl Henson, President of the Jim Henson Foundation. The Fraggle Rock Doozertube Fan Date includes a 15-minute one-on-one chat with an actual resident of Fraggle Rock along with a package of collectibles and figurines from the beloved television series.

The Center is offering several VIP experiences for bidders to have all-access parties and private performances. Reserve the Center for a Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Private Holiday Party with up to fifty guests. The night includes a private performance of the Center for Puppetry Arts’ Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, admission to the Worlds of Puppetry Museum, and a special version of our Create-A-Puppet Workshop™. Guests will also enjoy a wine and cheese party in our atrium where they can see the rare Santa and Rudolph stop motion puppets from the Rankin/Bass Productions classic television special from 1964 on special exhibition at the Center (photo shoot included and encouraged!).

Winners of the Ghastly Dreadfuls Halloween Party are invited for a night of chills and thrills during the run of The Ghastly Dreadfuls!  Before the show, fifteen guests will enjoy pizza and drinks.  The party will get a shout out at the beginning of the show and leave with a signed program from the show.

For anyone ready for a getaway, there’s the Woodlawn Estate Vacation Package. Spend four days and three nights in West Point, Georgia at Woodlawn Farm. Situated along a 1/2 mile stretch of the Chattahoochee River, you’re invited to get lost in the vistas, explore the hiking trails, experience a night under the stars at the riverside campground, or relax in the beautifully renovated main house and accompanying grounds.  From immersive experiences to rare Kermit collectibles, from earrings to wine baskets, all types of items will also be up for auction at every price range.

“As with so many things this year, the challenges of COVID inspired us to do something different – to take our silent auction online. Not only does it allow us to have the auction, it allows us to continue to expand our presence nationally and internationally through our digital platforms” said Executive Director, Beth Schiavo. “We are deeply grateful of the generous support of Cheryl Henson, The Jim Henson Company, and all of our board members without whom none of this would have been possible.”

Donations to the Center will also be accepted throughout the auction allowing patrons to provide funding for field trips and other programming. All proceeds and donations will go directly to the Center for Puppetry Arts and will be allocated to help cover any and all losses that were caused from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Auction participants can register at http://www.bidpal.net/calltoauction any time leading up to the event.

Center for Puppetry Arts - Jim Henson Collection - Grand Opening Announced!

At long last we now know when the Center for Puppetry Arts' new expansion - including their Jim Henson Collection - will open!

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the one above must be worth at least three times that as Saturday. November 14th is announced as the date for the grand opening.

From their official announcement:

After many years of fundraising, design, and construction, the Center for Puppetry Arts invites you to celebrate the completion of its “Believe in Make Believe” campaign and the official opening of its new museum on Saturday, November 14!

The Worlds of Puppetry permanent exhibit will house the Global Collection gallery and the Jim Henson Collection gallery, the world’s most comprehensive collection of the work of Jim Henson.

Patrons will enjoy the newly expanded 7,500 square foot museum space, as well as a renovated entryway, expanded museum store, new research library, and other exciting updates to the Center.
Great museums are characterized by their ability to continually educate, inspire, and evolve,” said Vincent Anthony, Center for Puppetry Arts founding Executive Director. “Our team has been preparing for this day for many years, and we are thankful for the generous contributions from the Jim Henson family, our benevolent donors, generous Members, and the support of our community. This is a true turning point for the Center for Puppetry Arts – and we welcome visitors to come discover the magic and wonder that lie behind these doors.”

Grand opening festivities will include well-known walk-around Henson characters, photo opportunities, and other engaging activities that will make the day a festival-like celebration.

Members and donors can be among the first to experience the new museum in a week-long series of preview events before the grand opening! More details on these preview events will be shared at a later date. Click here to become a Member and receive access to these preview events plus other great benefits all year long.

If you didn't win any of the items Steve Whitmire donated, and would still like to contribute
to the Center's expansion, they will announce details in August for the general public to support the “Believe in Make Believe” campaign. To date they have raised more than $14 million!

Center for Puppetry Arts Expansion Progress!

I had the opportunity to visit the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta last weekend and see the progress on their massive expansion project.

This will be the new Jim Henson exhibit area, set to open in October!

For reference this is how it looked before:

This is an inside look. No hardhat required!

Here are the plans for how it will look once completed.

This space used to contain some of the Henson items on display but where put back into storage when vibrations from the construction become a concern.

The only two Henson items currently on display in the main area now are Charley Muskrat and Harvey Beaver from Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas

This section in the rear will be the new gift shop:

Speaking of the gift shop, it has be temporarily moved to a room that also showcased many Henson exhibits. Though there are still plenty of Henson items to found!

The recent Pez

Pillows, lunch boxes, plush and puppets, including the retired Jr Gorg and Mokey puppets from Manhattan Toy, get 'em while they last!

The Sesame Street section has many many plush, activity books, toys, and some Pajanimals!

There's also a great selection of Sesame puppets,

Kermit and Piggy Britto statues,

as well as vintage Fraggle Rock PVC toys!

They have two Doozers as well as Boober and Gobo Fraggle. These were found by the
Henson family and given to the museum to sell. They're mostly in mint condition and are being sold for a hardly wallet breaking $3.99 each!

That's a great deal for these very much long out of print Fraggle items.

If you have to opportunity to see the museum - I highly recommend it,
especially
once the Henson wing is opened.
