Adam Savage’s Tested "How Henson Puppeteers Bring Muppets to Life"!

Adam Savage visited Jim Henson's Creature Shop and talked John Tartaglia, Donna Kimball, AKA Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock's Gobo and Mokey Fraggle to learn how Muppets work.

John and Donna show Adam just how complex (physically as well as mentally) it is to bring Muppets to life on film, drawing from the methods developed by Jim Henson himself. You'll never look at a Muppet performance the same way again!

More Fraggle Rock and Labyrinth On The Way!

Two big stories just circulated. If recent reports from Vulture and Deadline are true, be ready to return to the worlds of Fraggle Rock and Labyrinth in the near future.

First, it appears that the long rumored sequel to Labyrinth may actually be moving forward... again.

Deadline is reporting that the Jim Henson Company and TriStar Pictures have hired
Scott Derrickson, who helmed Marvel's Dr. Strange and was supposed return for that sequel, is instead heading to play in Jareth's realm after creative differences with Marvel Studios.

Maggie Levin, who wrote and directed the "My Valentine" episode for the Hulu anthology series Into the Dark, will pen the script.

Lisa Henson is producing, while Brian Henson is executive producing and Blanca Lista, SVP of feature film production for Henson, is shepherding the project for The Jim Henson Company. In addition to directing, Derrickson is also executive producing with his frequent collaborator C. Robert Cargill.

So far there in no word if Jennifer Connelly or her character Sarah will factor in the story or if will the film focus on a newcomer to the Labyrinth.

There's been rumblings about another feature film trip into the world of Labyrinth before, but hopefully this has more luck then previous attempts.

Down in Fraggle Rock, after the success of Apple TV+'s Fraggle Rock: Rock On shorts, the streaming platform has made a straight to series deal with the Henson Company to produce new full-length episodes.
The series will be produced by the Jim Henson Company in association with New Regency, with Matt Fusfeld and Alex Cuthbertson serving as showrunners, writers, and exec producers.

As with the Rock On shorts, Lisa Henson, Halle Stanford, and John Tartaglia will exec produce the new episodes. Ritamarie Peruggi will also be a producer and Harvey Mason Jr. will be executive music producer of the show.

FRAGGLE ROCK Reboot Coming to Apple TV+ - Nerdist

No word yet on how many episodes, when we should expect them - we're still in quartertine, don't forget-  or any details about the new series, but original Muppet performers Dave Goelz and Karen Prell are attached, and we expect Donna Kimball and Frankie Cordero to return as Mokey and Wembley as well.

In the meantime, as part of the deal Apple TV+ acquired the exclusive streaming rights to all 96 episodes of the original series, as well as some specials, and will make them available to all of their subscribers in 100 countries beginning today!
The deal does not include the animated series.

Rock On! is filmed entirely on iPhone 11 devices from the homes of the production team and individuals from all over the U.S.

Behind the show are executive-producers Halle Stanford and John Tartaglia who also takes over performing Gobo from the late Jerry Nelson. Other recasts include Donna Kimball as Mokey and Frankie Cordero as Wembly. However, Karen Prell is back as Red Fraggle and Dave Goelz returns as Boober and Uncle Traveling Matt.

Jim Henson Puppets Coming to Princess Cruises!

As if Splash and Bubbles doesn't keep him busy enough, John Tartaglia has once again teamed up with the Jim Henson Company on a nautical musical adventure.

From Cruise Critic:
"The Secret Silk," the third Princess Cruises production show in collaboration with award-winning composer Stephen Schwartz, will be a contemporary spin on an old Japanese folk tale, featuring life-size puppetry by Jim Henson's Creature Shop.
The storyline is adapted from the fable "The Grateful Crane," and features Lan, described as a selfless young woman who possesses a magical gift: secretly creating beautiful silk fabrics. The show, created and directed by Tony Award-nominated John Tartaglia, will include an original song called "Sing to the Sky".
Tartaglia is known for his work as a puppeteer/actor/singer/dancer/voice artist/comedian on Broadway's "Avenue Q," "Beauty and the Beast," and "Shrek The Musical." Schwartz, the creative director, is heralded for acclaimed musicals "Godspell," "Pippin" and "Wicked." The partnership between Princess and Schwartz has already resulted in two original onboard productions, "Magic To Do" and "Born To Dance".
"Presenting this timeless, ancient fable as the third production in our partnership, through the accomplishments of John's creativity and Stephen's guidance and vision, will no doubt deliver an outstanding entertainment experience for our guests," said Denise Saviss, Princess Cruises vice president of entertainment experience, in a news release.
"The Secret Silk" debuts exclusively on Royal Princess starting in mid-February during its Caribbean season before heading to Island Princess in May 2018 for its Alaska season, and then on to Diamond Princess in fall 2018.
A fourth Stephen Schwartz production for Princess Cruises will be announced in 2019.

Meet Splash and Bubbles!

PBS unveiled the new website of their new Henson produced preschool series Splash and Bubbles.

The series uses the Henson digital performance system like other Henson/PBS shows Sid the Science Kid and Dinosaur Train.

The new "splash page" if you will, does a nice job of introducing the main characters.

Splash:

"We'll bravely go where no fish has gone before!
Splash is a fun and energetic yellowback fusilier who found a home in Reeftown after traveling the entire ocean. He loves to explore new places and meet new creatures.

Bubbles:

“Ocean Friends Forever, we'll stick together like goo!”

Bubbles is a beautiful mandarin dragonet who loves to get dirty in the muck and the yuck. She's never afraid to face a challenge and is always up for an adventure.

Dunk:

“It's always an adventure, when you're hangin' with friends!”

Dunk is a pufferfish, who likes to make sand art and knows a lot about Reeftown. Being a pufferfish, he tends to puff up when he gets nervous around a new situation.

Ripple

“See what one small ripple can do!”

Ripple is a soulful and sweet seahorse, who believes even the smallest thing can make a big impact. She lives with her father and 499 brothers, and loves to get away with Splash, Bubbles, and Dunk on adventures.

Splash and Bubbles will premiere on PBS November 23!

PBS KIDS Sets Premiere Date for ‘Splash and Bubbles’!

The Jim Henson Company's latest series, Splash and Bubbles will premiere Wednesday, November 23, 2016 on PBS stations nationwide with digital content related to the show — including games, apps and parent and educator resources — available in the fall.

We first heard word of the series back in January when it had the working title of simply "Splash."

From the Henson press release:
Created by John Tartaglia (“ImaginOcean,” “Johnny and the Sprites”), SPLASH AND BUBBLES is designed to encourage kids ages 4-7 to explore the natural undersea world. Developed with an advisory panel of top marine biologists, digital innovators and educators, SPLASH AND BUBBLES is grounded in a marine biology curriculum that focuses on themes of diversity, individuality, interconnectedness and the celebration of learning and discovery. The series also introduces the concepts of ecological balance and the importance of taking care of the ocean.

SPLASH AND BUBBLES emphasizes the important social-emotional skills needed to help kids discover the interconnectivity among all living creatures, while creating an understanding of the variety of life that exists under the sea, fostering an appreciation for the biodiversity in our ocean,” said Lesli Rotenberg, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Children’s Media and Education, PBS. “PBS KIDS is committed to using the power of media to build science skills to help inspire children to explore the fascinating world of marine biology and the wonder that makes up the majority of our planet’s surface.”

Funded in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, SPLASH AND BUBBLES follows the adventures of Splash, a yellow fusilier fish who has migrated all over the ocean before settling down in Reeftown, where he befriends Bubbles, a Mandarin dragonet whose vivid orange and electric blue coloring matches her colorful personality. Until Splash came along, Bubbles and most of the other Reeftown residents had no idea what lived beyond the cozy confines of their coral walls. Together, Splash, Bubbles and their friends explore the world’s undersea habitats, make new friends and learn about the many different ways life looks and lives in the ocean, celebrating the importance of diversity along the way.

“Through the adventures of Splash and Bubbles, we hope to inspire environmentalism, empathy and curiosity about the vast world of marine biology,” said Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company. “We hope the series becomes a starting point for children to build confidence in their ability to make a difference in our environment and inspires a lifetime of learning.”

“We are excited to partner with two world-class brands, Henson and PBS, to create lifechanging emotional connections between kids and the ocean. Through SPLASH AND BUBBLES-themed experiences, we can bring the same memories created every day in our aquariums to children’s living rooms and lives,” said Andrew Wexler, CEO of Herschend Enterprises.

“I feel honored and privileged to help carry on The Jim Henson Company’s great tradition of creating family entertainment that inspires care-taking, empathy and awareness of and for our world,” said John Tartaglia, the series creator and the performer of the show’s title character, Splash. “My hope is that SPLASH AND BUBBLES’ amazing characters and hilarious stories inspire kids of all ages to learn more about what lies beneath the surface of our amazing ocean and how they can contribute to taking better care of it.”

SPLASH AND BUBBLES is executive produced by Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford of The Jim Henson Company, Julie Phillips and Merrill Puckett-Miller of Herschend Enterprises, as well as John Tartaglia, Michael Shawn Lewis and Jill Shinderman. Tom Keniston is producer and David Skelly is supervising director. The Jim Henson Company oversees all distribution and merchandising for the property and Herschend Enterprises administers all themed entertainment rights.

PASADENA, Calif.--()--Television Critics Association Press Tour: In fall 2016, PBS KIDS will premiere SPLASH (w.t.), a new animated series that dives into marine biology and ocean science. Created by John Tartaglia (“Imaginocean,” “Johnny and the Sprites”) and produced by The Jim Henson Company (DINOSAUR TRAIN, SID THE SCIENCE KID) and Herschend Enterprises (Dollywood, Harlem Globetrotters), SPLASH (w.t.) is designed to encourage kids ages 4-7 to explore the diversity and spectacle of our natural undersea world. “SPLASH (w.t.) will engage and educate young viewers by presenting the novelty of the ‘strange-but-true’ world of the ocean with humor and music. Funny, character-driven songs will reinforce the show’s learning goals, helping kids build key skills as they sing along with their underwater friends.”

“PBS KIDS offers high-quality media content to meet the needs of today’s kids, sparking their curiosity and excitement about learning,” said Lesli Rotenberg, General Manager, Children’s Media, PBS. “While oceans cover the majority of the Earth’s surface, there is a profound lack of educational media for young children that explores the science of the fascinating world under the sea. SPLASH (w.t.) will introduce kids to the wonders of marine biology, building science skills and fostering an appreciation for the biodiversity that lives in our oceans.”
SPLASH (w.t.) follows the adventures of its title character, a yellow fusilier fish who has migrated all over the oceans before settling down with his family in Reeftown, where he befriends three inquisitive fellow sea creatures. Until Splash came along, Bubbles, Dunk, Ripple and most of the other Reeftown residents had no idea what lay beyond the cozy confines of their coral walls. Together, Splash and his friends explore the world’s oceans, where they meet wildly diverse marine animals and discover otherworldly undersea habitats, bringing back what they’ve learned to share with their neighbors.
Forty episodes of SPLASH (w.t.) will be produced, each including two 11-minute stories full of comedy and adventure. A production of The Jim Henson Company and Herschend Enterprises, the series is created by John Tartaglia and executive produced by Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford of The Jim Henson Company, Julie Phillips and Merrill Puckett-Miller of Herschend Enterprises, as well as John Tartaglia, Michael Shawn Lewis and Jill Shinderman. Tom Keniston is producer and David Skelly is supervising director. The Jim Henson Company oversees all distribution and merchandising for the property and Herschend Enterprises administers all themed entertainment rights.
“We are so proud to bring our newest show to PBS KIDS and introduce young audiences to meaningful ‘first friends’ we know they will love,” said Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company. “Reeftown is a bustling ocean neighborhood, welcoming kids to get to know the incredible citizens of the sea. Through the adventures of Splash and his friends, we hope to inspire environmentalism by helping young children build confidence in their ability to make a difference. We also hope they develop empathy for all the creatures that share this planet with us.”
“The ocean is a fascinating and essential part of our world, yet most kids have a very limited understanding of what it is, what lives there and why it is so important to all of us,” said John Tartaglia, the series creator and the performer of the show’s title character.
The characters, storylines and settings in SPLASH (w.t.) are grounded in a marine biology curriculum that focuses on themes of diversity, individuality, interconnectedness and the celebration of learning and discovery. Created in partnership with an advisory panel of top marine biologists, digital media innovators and preschool educators, the series will cover a variety of foundational concepts in biology that are relatable to the everyday lives of young children, such as home and habitat, as well as physical and behavioral traits and differences. SPLASH (w.t.) also introduces the concepts of ecological balance and the importance of taking care of our oceans.
The series will emphasize important social and emotional skills, as Splash and his friends learn about getting along in a community on the reef. SPLASH (w.t.) aims to help children discover the interconnectivity among all living creatures, the planet and the relationships human beings share with them. The series will help children and their families build an understanding of the diversity of life that exists under the sea and build compassion for that life. Viewers will also discover and celebrate the value of diversity overall, as Splash and his friends explore new habitats, make new friends and learn about all the different ways life looks and lives in the ocean. As Splash and his friends play and explore such topics as habitats and symbiotic relationships, viewers will discover these connections and appreciate their importance.
SPLASH (w.t.) will offer families a multiplatform media experience, including the on-air series, as well as interactive content online and on mobile. A variety of SPLASH (w.t.) games, hands-on activities and parent resources will be available online at pbskids.org, and mobile apps from the series will be offered. The series’ digital content, which will launch in fall 2016, will help inspire children’s curiosity and excitement about exploring the wonders of the sea.
*(w.t.) means working title. So the official nam for the show could still change.
