RIP Lyle Conway

Sad news as veteran Creature Shop sculptor Lyle Conway has died.

Conway began his career at the Henson Company in the Muppet Workshop on The Muppet Show.

He was later asked design the creatures and be the fabrication supervisor on The Dark Crystal sculpting many Skeksis, Urskeks, and Aughra.

ODreamchild he oversaw the entire shop making sure The Mad Hatter, March Hare, and Lewis Carrol's other creatures looked as close as possible to the book's descriptions and illustrations. After Dreamchild, he freelanced for other films and returned to The Creature Shop to work on Where the Wild Thigs Are.

Jim's Red book from 7/16/1984 – ‘Dreamchild begins shooting.’ includes this passage about Lyle:

"Designer Lyle Conway, having followed The Dark Crystal with work on the film Return to Oz, was tapped by Jim to oversee the shop for Dreamchild. Conway’s experience paid off and the build exploited everything he and the team had learned, using it in a much more efficient fashion. The budget was tight and, as Conway described, it “…turned out to be one fourth the work [of The Dark Crystal] at ten times the speed. We had 14 weeks to build everything, which is no time at all for us, and I think we stayed that much fresher as a result.” The film opened in summer 1985 to generally positive reviews, particularly for Coral Browne’s performance as Alice, and the writers made much of the creatures from Jim’s shop. The review in The Guardian noted, “The realization by Jim Henson and his team of the fabled creatures of Lewis Carroll’s imagination is beguilingly original.”

A few of Conway's non-Creature Shop work included 1988's The Blob and Return to Oz, in which he not only worked on the creatures, but also performed the voice and face of the Gump. His most notable post-Henson credit was on Frank Oz's Little Shop of Horrors designing Audrey II in each different phase, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for
Best Visual Effects.

Animation Magazine: Mokey’s Makeover!

Pretty much everyone likes Fraggle Rock, and pretty much everyone was excited to see the Fraggles return in AppleTV+'s reboot Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock, but a controversy of the new show has been Mokey's makeover.

Animation Magazine spoke with with the Henson Creature Shop’s New York-based creative supervisor Jason Weber about Mokey’s makeover and thought that went into it and why.

"Mokey’s character (as delightful as she is) did not appear to be a peer of the characters. She seemed more of a mentor or parental figure as opposed to someone who was the same age as the others. So, for this new reboot, we wanted her to look younger, like a friend or sister."

You can see a few of the concepts and ideas they went through below.

Adam Savage Learns the Infamous "Henson Stitch" and 3D Printed Doozers!"

Adam Savage posted a few new videos at Jim Henson's Creature Shop. This time he's there to learn the "Henson Stitch" and see how 3D printing changed the way Doozers are made.

Adam Savage Learns the Infamous "Henson Stitch!" (In Support of @PuppetNerd)

Adam Savage LOVES puppets, and he's used many of the skills he's learned from puppet making into his costume builds over the years. So when the Jim Henson Company invited Adam down to the Creature Shop to learn the legendary "Henson stitch" from fabrication supervisor Scott Johnson, he jumped at the chance. But even more so, the Henson Company and Tested wanted to come together to bring attention to a mutual fan and friend named Adam Kreutinger, aka @PuppetNerd, an elementary school art teacher/puppet maker/puppeteer who's battling brain cancer right now. You can support Adam too by subscribing to his channel (it rocks!), watching and liking his videos, buying his book (https://amzn.to/49yRqPs) or merch (https://puppetnerd.com/merch/) or contributing to his GoFundMe (https://www.gofundme.com/f/aid-for-ad.... We hope Adam's work brings you as much joy and expertise as it has us!

3D Printing ... DOOZERS?

If you're a fan of Fraggle Rock (and who ISN'T?), then you're familiar with Doozers. When they first debuted in the '80s, each foam latex Doozer had to be sculpted, molded and flocked -- quite a task when you need hundreds and hundreds. Robert Bennett, character designer and fabricator at the Jim Henson Company, explains to Adam how computers and 3D printers have changed EVERYTHING when it comes to these beloved characters.

Adam Savage Inside the Henson Archives and Learns Some Puppet Magic!

Adam Savage posted more videos visiting the Jim Henson company. This time he's going inside the archives and learning more about the techniques used during Puppet Up

Adam Savage Visits Jim Henson’s Archives!

In New York, the Jim Henson Legacy shares space with the Creature Shop. Adam Savage talks to archives director and Legacy vice-president Karen Falk about how the two inspire each other (including with the building of puppets for Puppet Up) and sees some very early sketches by Muppets creator Jim Henson, who imbued so much personality and function with just a few lines.

Adam Savage Learns Some PUPPET MAGIC!

One of the Puppet Up! sketches that blew our minds was "The Usher," in which actor and puppeteer Michael Oosterom and his colleague Bishop Rhone use video looping and precise choreography to turn one singing, dancing usher into FIVE. Could YOU ever do this

Adam Savage vs. Jim Henson Puppeteers

When Brian Henson invited Tested to film behind the scenes of Puppet Up, his puppet improv show, we jumped at the chance. What wasn't wholly expected was Brian calling Adam up on stage to try out his own puppet skills in the audience segment. It went ... um,

Adam Savage Performs with Puppet Up & Learns How the Puppets Are Made!

Adam Savage is back at the Henson company to learn how to perform puppets and see how the Creature Shop recreates some classic characters from the past.

Join Adam Savage and Brian Henson, Chairman of the Board at the Jim Henson Company, for a puppeteering adventure like no other. Discover backstage secrets, get schooled on improv puppeteering, and watch as Adam tries his hand (literally!) on stage along with the incredible Puppet Up! crew. Prepare for laughs and a dash of puppet chaos in Adam’s first on-stage puppeteering performance! (Don't worry -- he's keeping his day job.)

At Jim Henson's Creature Shop in New York, Adam Savage learns how talented fabricators transform the characters from two of Jim Henson's earliest sketches -- the Glow Worm and Business Business -- into two sets of puppets that will appear live on stage in Brian Henson's Puppet Up improv show. It's a balance between recreating some of the mechanisms developed by Jim and his team in the 1960s, and using modern techniques like 3D printing to make the performance pop for a live audience. And we'd say they pulled it off quite beautifully.

Adam Savage visited Jim Henson's Creature Shop and talked John Tartaglia, Donna Kimball, AKA Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock's Gobo and Mokey Fraggle to learn how Muppets work.

The Weirdos Go On Tour With Coldplay!

We all know Dr. Teeth and Electric Mayhem, The River Bottom Nightmare Band, and Fraggle's Rock's The Minstrels, but now a new Henson puppet band is making a name for themselves - The Weirdos!

Fronted by Angle Moon, The Weirdos are a new a creation by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop that are not only on tour with Coldplay, they've been signed to their label, Atlantic Records as well.

Coldplay's Chris Martin talked with Billboard about the The Weirdos, their involvement in the tour, and getting them a record deal.

“The Weirdos are a band who we’re trying to help out,....it’s really “Bruno [Mars] and Ed [Sheeran]’s label,” maybe Dua Lipa or Cardi B’s, but also Coldplay’s label. And now the Weirdos, too.

“They have one song at the moment [‘Biutyful’] and we’re on it with them,” Martin continued before taking a brief time out to question if the way he was describing this intergalactically weird off-shoot of the Music of the Spheres universe was making any sense. What is most definitely true is that Angel Moon has been singing a duet of “Biutyful” with Martin on the tour, performing to more than a million people so far across the band’s Latin American and U.S. dates over the past 3 months according to Coldplay’s label.
Even as he tried to toe the story’s carefully crafted line, Martin couldn’t help but crack himself up as he navigated the ornate narrative turns. “The way I discovered them was we were working with Angel Moon, this lady… creature,” the singer said as guitarist Jonny Buckland stifled a laugh while sitting on a green room couch in the bowels of the Bears’ stadium as he watched his old friend try to explain the weirdness.

“How do I explain this? I think we just felt like…” Martin continued, careful to not blow the surprise or tip his hand, while also earnestly wanting to explain why he’s been singing with a gnome-like puppet on stage during the band’s carefully choreographed, low-emission global tour that has seen recent cameos from Lupe Fiasco, Kylie Minogue and Bruce Springsteen.
Regardless, Moon and her bandmates — Donk, Sparkman and The Wizard — will rock The Tonight Show after the band signed a “historic” contract with Atlantic and Parlophone Records on Tuesday. According to a release announcing the unusual deal, their manager, Bruce Cakemix, described the deal as “the biggest step forward in human-alien relations since Close Encounters.”

“I think we thought that we’ve sort of come to the end of doing singles as Coldplay. I think we’ve probably basically finished doing that, in general. We can’t go more poppier or single-y [than the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 BTS collaboration “My Universe”] than that and that felt good and we’re a bit older now. So we do have songs we want to bring some attention to, but with this we asked the Weirdoes if they would do the song and front it and we would feature.”

According to Martin, some people say the Weirdos are from another planet, and some say, “there’s a room in Los Angeles where all of the rejected puppets live and they maybe come from there.”

Martin and Coldplay will help
The Weirdos make their network TV debut Friday night on The Tonight Show, where the group will jam on “Biutyful” from Coldplay’s new "Music of the Spheres" album.

Creature Shop Unveils "World's Largest Puppet Ever Conceived"!

To celebrate next week's opening of the Wildlife Explorers Basecamp attraction at the San Diego Zoo, Jim Henson's Creature Shop unveiled Percy the Porcupine.

Standing at about two stories tall, it's creators say it's "the world's largest puppet ever conceived." Percy's nose is reportedly the size of a Volkswagen Beetle.

Before heading to the zoo, hundreds of students were able to see the puppet at its stop a Griffith Park.

"One of the hardest things is to try to create something that's cute on such a large scale," said Peter Brooke, the creative supervisor for Jim Henson's Creature Shop. "To try and keep the cuteness on such a huge scale, that was the hard thing to keep the character."

The Wildlife Explorers Basecamp was created to teach families about the interactions of humans, plants, animals and their habitats.

You can watch more of the story from Los Angele's ABC7 below.

More info and photos of Percy's construction can be found via the LA Times.
