Sesame Street Introduces two New Black Muppets to Talk About Race!

Two new Muppets just made their debut.

Elijah and Wesley are part of Sesame Workshop's "Coming Together" initiative that has so far included a town hall with CNN about racism and protest, and the special, The Power of We.
The two newest resident on the street will be joined by Gabrielle and her cousin Tamir, two other Black Muppets who debuted in those earlier specials.

While Sesame Workshop has always highlighted the importance of multiculturalism and inclusivity this is the first time it's tackled race and racism head-on.

Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind Sesame Street, is releasing new resources to support families in talking to their children about race and racism. The “ABCs of Racial Literacy” is part of Coming Together, Sesame Workshop’s ongoing commitment to racial justice. Designed to provide families with the tools they need to build racial literacy, to have open conversations with young children, to engage allies and advocates to become upstanders against racism, and more, Coming Together includes a racial justice educational framework, ongoing research, and a rolling release of new content on SesameWorkshop.org/ComingTogether.

Coming Together is rooted in extensive research and consultation with experts to develop a groundbreaking Racial Justice educational framework and curriculum for young children. Like the science-based whole-child model that Sesame Street is known for, this framework will help guide and inform the creation of new Sesame Workshop content going forward—including future seasons of Sesame Street. Today’s announcement, which is part of the Sesame Street in Communities initiative, builds on recent efforts focused on tackling racism and its impact on children, including The Power of We: A Sesame Street Special, the CNN Town Hall Coming Together: Standing Up to Racism, and related short-form content.

“At Sesame Workshop, we look at every issue through the lens of a child. Children are not colorblind—not only do they first notice differences in race in infancy, but they also start forming their own sense of identity at a very young age,” said Dr. Jeanette Betancourt, Senior Vice President, Sesame Workshop. “‘The ABCs of Racial Literacy’ is designed to foster open, age-appropriate conversations among families and support them in building racial literacy. By encouraging these much-needed conversations through Coming Together, we can help children build a positive sense of identity and value the identities of others."

The new ‘ABCs of Racial Literacy’ resources launching today are designed to help all families celebrate their own unique identities, while also providing age-appropriate language and strategies to answer sometimes-tough questions around race and racism. In one video featuring two new Muppets, 5-year-old Wes and his father Elijah, Elmo wants to know why Wes’s skin is brown. Elijah explains the concept of melanin and that the color of our skin is an important part of who we are. In a new music video, the Sesame Street Muppets celebrate their own unique identities; the song, “Giant,” is available on all major platforms through Warner Music Group’s Arts Music. In another video coming soon, Rosita’s mom and her friend Sofia help Rosita cope with a racist incident in the grocery store, while also celebrating speaking Spanish. Additional resources include videos featuring real families talking about their experiences, activities for families to do together, and talking points and conversation starters for families.

The new Coming Together: The ABCs of Racial Literacy resources launching today are available at no cost to families at SesameWorkshop.org/ComingTogether. The resources, which are available in English and Spanish, will also be distributed through a wide range of national and community providers as part of Sesame Street in Communities, Sesame Workshop’s program to support children and families, particularly those most vulnerable. Additional professional development materials for providers like social workers, educators, and healthcare providers will also be available.

"Sesame Workshop has always stood for diversity, inclusion, equity, and kindness. As a trusted source for families, we have a responsibility to speak out for racial justice and empower families to have conversations about race and identity with their children at a young age,” said Kay Wilson Stallings, Executive Vice President of Creative and Production, Sesame Workshop. “The work to dismantle racism begins by helping children understand what racism is and how it hurts and impacts people. Sadly, today’s announcement comes at a time of racial and social discord when many families are in need of support in talking to their children about racism. We’re proud to reaffirm our Coming Together commitment to racial justice, which will be woven into new Sesame Workshop content for years to come.”

According to a recent Children and Racism study commissioned by Sesame Workshop to capture and elevate the voices of children ages 6-11 and their parents, racism was top of mind for nearly half the children surveyed with racism more prevalent in responses of Black children. The majority of parents were comfortable with children learning about race and racism through media, books, or school, yet only 23% of parents report that specific resources helped them prepare for discussions with their children. The new ABCs of Racial Literacy resources seek to fill a gap for parents and caregivers as they embark on conversations with their children about race and racism. A full report of the study findings will be released this spring.

More to read, listen, and play is coming soon from across the Workshop to continue the conversation as part of Coming Together. In the coming year, Sesame Workshop will release additional Sesame Street in Communities resources made possible by the generous support of donors including PNC Foundation, USAA, and the Joan Ganz Cooney Fund for Vulnerable Children.

Carmen Osbahr, Ryan Dillon, Bradley Freeman Jr.,
and Chris Thomas Hayes on set

Elijah is played by Chris Thomas Hayes who took over the role of Hoots the Owl, while Wesley is played by brand new cast member Bradley Freeman Jr.

Time Magazine talked to both about the characters as well as Sesame Workshop character designer Henry Luis Mitchell.
“He’s very imaginative, he’s very fun,” Freeman says of Wes. “He’s always trying to help his friends and make sure that they feel safe and that they feel loved and that they can feel strong in their own skin. The more I perform him, the more I get to know him. Sometimes he gets a little lost in his own emotions because he comes from a family that’s very big on communicating how they feel—he’s able to communicate, but he’s also 5 years old. So sometimes things overwhelm him, and he can be angry or sad. So that’s where he really relies on his dad and his friends to make sure that he can come to the best solution possible.”
Mitchell cites his own son as an inspiration for Wes, says he didn’t base Elijah on himself but was able to bring “the spirit of fatherhood” to his work. Elijah’s puppeteer, Chris Thomas Hayes, too, has found a connection with the characters. “A lot of the things they wrote, I was looking around, like, ‘Are they watching me?’ Because it says there is a 5-year-old son; I have a 5-year-old son,” he says. “It’s really been a moment of thinking about the conversations and the situations that I’m going to be dealing with my kid being in this world. And that’s something I hope that I bring to the character.”
Hayes, Elijah’s puppeteer, says he is not surprised that Sesame Workshop would move in this direction given its history, and he hopes Wes and Elijah end up on the TV show too. “It is something very special to really come out and go, ‘These characters are African American or Black,'” he says. “I’m so proud of the company, and it makes me want to do all I can to help them do this message. Even though it does ruffle some feathers, it’s for the right reasons, because sometimes we have to ruffle feathers in order to be better than we were yesterday.”

SesameWorkshop.org/ComingTogether will be regularly updated with new content for children and families promoting racial justice.

Rare Muppet Clips Book 2 Vol 2 & 3: Muppets Tonight!

Muppets Tonight recently celebrated its 25th Anniversary and with the series still not widely  available, today we have an all Muppets Tonight edition of ...

Again, we do not own these clips, nor do we make any guarantees to how long they'll be available, so watch them while you can!

After debuting on The Jim Henson Hour, Clifford got a slight personality change and became Muppets Tonight's host. Here he is promoting the series on Sinbad's short-lived talk show Vibe.

Newer fan favorites Pepe the King Prawn, and Bobo the Bear got their start on the short lived ABC/ Disney Channel series.

Pepe originally operated the elevator with Seymour the elephant, before taking the stage and then ultimately becoming a solo artist.

Bobo maned (beared?) the security desk, where he often wouldn't let guests in:

But, when he fell in love with Cindy Crawford, Bobo got to sing "I'm a Believer" with Mickey Dolenz:

The series also introduced us to Johnny Fiama and Sal:

Muppets Tonight not only updated Pigs in Space (Pigs in Space Deep Dish nine), it also spoofed shows like BayWatch, Tales from Crypt, ER, and The Real World.

Bay of PigsWatch: Landmine

EIEIOR:

The Muppet Real World:

Tales from the Vet: The Turkey Who Loved Thanksgiving:

Just like The Muppet Show, Muppets Tonight had segments only shown in the UK.

Many of these skits featured Muppet Treasure Island's Clueless Morgan and Polly Lobster talking with "Mr Callahan."

Classic Muppets like Miss Piggy also appeared in handful of episodes. Here is Miss Piggy & Billy Crystal spoofing "When Harry Met Sally"'s famous deli scene:

And of course Kermt was there, serving as executive producer, but he also got to perform The Talking Heads' "Once in a Lifetime" as well.

Here's hoping Muppet Tonight gets a proper release on Disney+ soon, so these and many more clips will no longer be considered rare.

Set Your Timer for Duff’s Happy Fun Bake Time!

The Jim Henson Company teamed up with chef and TV personality Duff Goldman for Duff’s Happy Fun Bake Time, a new family friendly cooking show.

Join Duff Goldman in his laboratory kitchen, along with his puppet crew as they explore the science behind cooking and baking to create some of the most popular foods on the new discovery+ series from The Jim Henson Company, Duff’s Happy Fun Bake Time. Each of the six half-hour episodes is a flavorful adventure that goes beyond food rules and recipes to discover how ingredients work together to create delicious dishes and desserts. With comedy and whimsical fun, Duff and his entertaining puppet friends teach fundamental cooking techniques and tasty, easy-to-make recipes that inspire chefs of all ages to experiment in the kitchen. It’s always a fascinating food adventure with Duff and his friends!

“From the creative imaginations of superstar baker Duff Goldman and the iconic Jim Henson Company, Duff’s Happy Fun Bake Time is a magical collaboration that led to the creation of a series unlike any other,” said Courtney White, President, Food Network.”

““I think cooking is absolutely fascinating and I wanted to make a show that explained why things happen the way they do in the kitchen. When I understand the science behind the food I make, I somehow feel more connected to it and I wanted to share that with everyone,” said Duff Goldman.

In the land of Bakersburg, Duff goes on a journey of food discovery with his puppet team created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, including Couscous, his robot sidekick and sous chef, Dizzy, the enthusiastic industrial mixer and literal elephant-in-the- room who loves to stick her nose into everything going on in the kitchen, Edgar, the crabby crab straight out of the Chesapeake Bay, S’Later, the wise and quizzical, slow moving sloth, and Dragon Oven, who communicates with roars, hiccups, and smoke. Duff is also regularly visited by his musical grocer Geof (played by Duff’s real long-time executive sous chef, and songwriter, Geof Manthorne).

In each episode, Duff and his friends learn interesting science lessons with food experiments, from what happens if you bake a birthday cake without eggs, to why patience is the most important ingredient to baking the Best Bread on Earth, and why taste buds tingle with delight when mixing salty and sweet flavors. The fun doesn’t stop as Duff and his gang explore cake, bread, ice cream, pasta, chocolate, and other favorite food items.

“With its unique blend of science, mouthwatering dishes, and whimsical adventure, this is a show the whole family will want to watch together,” said Lisa Holme, Group SVP Content and Commercial Strategy discovery+.

“From battling a sea monster, to meeting aliens, to befriending a robot, a sloth, and a crab, Duff wanted to play in a dream fantasy kitchen, and we wanted to bring all of his hilarious puppet dreams to life!” said Halle Stanford, President of Television for The Jim Henson Company. “Duff’s enthusiasm and creativity matched perfectly with our own passion to keep families excited to explore and play together in the kitchen.”

Follow #DuffsHappyFunBakeTime on social for more of Duff’s cooking adventures with his friends. Fans can also visit www.discoveryplus.com, and follow along on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for more.

The Henson Company made the series to meet a demand for cooking shows, which have taken off amid the pandemic as at-home families spend time together making meals, said Stanford.

“Over the last year, we have seen an increased need for shows that families can enjoy together,” she says. “More than that, inspiring families to connect, and find ways to be creative and explore together is in so much of our work, so this series continues that legacy.”

Duff’s Happy Fun Bake Time premieres April 29 on Discovery+.

Craig Shemin's "Sam & Friends" Book Get Covered!

Back in 2018 we told you that Craig Shemin was working on a book about Sam and Friends.

While we still don't know when to expect Shemin's long awaited follow up to "The Muppets Character Encyclopedia," we now have a title and preliminary cover art!

The cover also reveals the foreword was written by Frankl Oz.

For those that don't know Sam and Friends was seen in Washington DC, twice a night for 5 minutes before the local news.

Stay tuned for more details about "Sam & Friends: The Story of Jim Henson's First Television Show."

Family Guy and South Park Show Major Muppet Love!

Last week, just as Kermit was reveled to be one of the Masked Signers, South Park began their quarantine special with a special "Muppetized" disclaimer.

South Park Disclaimer

Each South Park episode begins with a similar disclaimer as the one above. As you know Disney+ added a disclaimer to certain episodes of The Muppet Show driving conservative media to label it a part of "Cancel Culture." So it seems very fitting that South Park would parody both so fittingly.

Muppet Show Disclaimer

Meanwhile Family Guy, who's known for Muppet references and parodies, went full out this week by starting the episode "The Marrying Kind" with a full rendition of The Muppet Show theme.

With the Muppets back in the spotlight expect to see many more series to show their Muppet love.

RIP Isidore Mankofsky (Muppet Movie & Muppet*Vision 3D Cinematographer)

Isidore Mankofsky, cinematographer on The Muppet Movie and Muppet*Vision 3D has died. Though his name may not be familiar his work surely is.

The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) published a tribute to Isidore with amazing behind the scenes photos. Below is a small excerpt of their tribute.

In 1979, producer Jim Henson called upon the cinematographer to shoot The Muppet Movie, the popular television characters’ first big-screen adventure, directed by James Frawley. Henson’s hit The Muppet Show was shot in broadcast video and had a high-key, live-TV look that everyone knew wouldn’t translate to the big screen, and Mankofsky had to devise more cinema-appropriate visuals. The only caveat Henson had was that the Muppets’ distinctive colors — especially Kermit the Frog’s signature lime hue — had to remain true. “Green on film, especially at night, can be tough, and Kodak stocks at the time weren’t particularly sensitive to green,” noted Mankofsky.
“But it was great working with the Muppets. First of all, no one complained about the light in his eyes or how long he had to stand in — you just stuck them on a pole. And the puppeteers were really nice guys. When I asked Henson to move Kermit to the right a little for a better frame, Henson [who personally operated and voiced the character] wouldn’t answer — Kermit would answer.

“Henson didn’t want any visual effects,” Mankofsky continued. “He wanted everything live [in front of the camera]. For example, when Kermit was driving an old Studebaker, four or five puppeteers were working the puppets from the floor of the car, so the car had to be modified so it could be driven from the trunk. The wide-angle lens of a video camera poked out of the car’s distinctive grill so the driver could see.
“The question I’m asked most about The Muppet Movie is how Kermit rode the bike. We took a crane with an arm extended out, and monofilament ran from that down to the bike. Kermit’s feet were strapped to the pedals, and the pedals would turn as the bike wheels turned. The voice and mouth movements were remote-controlled; we’d just pull it along:
“However, the shot I’m most proud of is the one that shows Kermit sitting in a director’s chair on a big soundstage. Where’s Henson? I did that in such a simple way, and no one has figured it out. I put a couple mirrors in [below the chair], and Henson is behind the mirrors. I lit it so the shadows in the mirrors looked like they continued past the chair legs.”
In 1991, Mankofsky reunited with the Muppets to shoot a special-venue film in 3-D, a new format for him. On MuppetVision 3-D, which played the Disney Hollywood Studios park for almost two decades, Mankofsky was the creative cinematographer while Peter Anderson, ASC served as the technical cinematographer. “Peter wanted to shoot tests every day, but the producer came in and said, ‘Just shoot, and if it doesn’t turn out, then that can be considered the test,” Mankofsky remembered. “We only had to reshoot one day out of the whole schedule, and that was because the [interlocked] cameras went out of sync.”
Using a twin-camera 65mm rig custom-built for the project,
the top unit is shooting down into a mirror. The film stock in this
camera was run backwards, take up to feed, in order to correct the
mirror's flipped image, thus avoiding a quality-degrading optical in post.

Mankofsky remembered the massive amount of light needed for the shoot: “On a big outdoor set where Miss Piggy is fishing, I had 100 coops that each held six 1,000-watt bulbs just to get the fill-light level where we wanted it. For a key light, I had an 18K, and for back light, I had a Xenon. It got so hot up in the permanents that we had to stop shooting; it overpowered the air-conditioner! I needed 1,600 footcandles and had no idea how to get that, but after turning on all those coops, I put my meter up, and it read 1,600 footcandles exactly. Whew!”

Mankofsky's other film credits include The Jazz Singer (1980), Somewhere in Time and two movies directed by Savage Steve Holland and starring John Cusack: Better Off Dead … and One Crazy Summer. He also worked on TV movies for Columbo, Magnum, P.I. and The Wonderful World of Disney, A Very Brady Christmas and George Lucas' Ewoks: The Battle for Endor.

Mankofsky received the ASC's Presidents Award in 2009 for his leadership and service to the organization.

Isidore Mankofsky was 89.

Masked Singer Has A Frog In It's Throat!

The season premiere of The Masked Singer revealed the snail to be "the most famous guest on The Masked Singer ever"...

The snail clue package:

“Hiya folks! You know, I’ve acted, directed, produced, recorded albums, even graced the Oscars stage. I’m rubbed elbows with everyone from Robert DeNiro and Lady Gaga to Michelle Obama. And well, you might say I’m best known for appreciating the talent of those around me. Here, I want to show those harsh critics who’ve followed me throughout my career that I can shine on my own. And now I can’t wait to get out there and snail it, get it?”

Can you guess who it was? Yep, it was Kermit the snail, I mean Kermit the frog!

Kermit performed Hall & Oates' "You Make My Dreams (Come True)" and was going to perform “I’m a Believer” if he had returned.

The snail costume was a mobile cart driven my Matt Vogel preforming Kermit.

From Variety:

“We decided to structure the costume around a mobile cart device that was battery-operated and controlled by the celebrity hidden within,” said executive producer Craig Plestis. “Our biggest fear given the limited visibility was that our celebrity would drive off the stage, but luckily that didn’t happen.”

The idea for the Snail came out of a desire by the producers to come up with a costume that “was a complete surprise,” Plestis said. “In other words, you could not tell from the costume if the celebrity was male or female, tall or short, large or small, whatever. So we gave that idea to our Emmy award-winning costume designer, Marina Toybina, and she ran with it.”

Kermit ga
ve an exclusive interview to Entertainment Weekly about his experience on the show.

Coming in December: The Unseen Photos of Street Gang!

The Unseen Photos of Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street, a companion book to the upcoming Sesame Street documentary will be released in December.

The official companion book will feature previously unpublished photographs from the earliest seasons of Sesame Street as well as interviews with cast and crew.

Below is the official description:
This official tie-in book to the documentary Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street supplements the film’s exploration of the origins and legacy of Sesame Street with exclusive interviews and unseen photographs from the earliest seasons of the globally beloved series. Author Trevor Crafts, who was given unprecedented access to archival footage and photography, presents 150 of photographer David Attie’s behind-the-scenes images of Jim Henson, Frank Oz, Matt Robinson, Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, Bert and Ernie, and dozens of other pioneering puppeteers, animators, actors, and Muppets. Crafts uses Attie’s photos to expand upon the film’s story of how show creator Joan Ganz Cooney, along with Sesame Workshop co-founder Lloyd Morrisett, director Jon Stone, and Muppet creator Jim Henson, took the values and goals of the civil rights movement and revolutionized children’s television.

The Unseen Photos of Street Gang is a tribute to the enduring achievements of a rebellious group of artists, educators, and freethinkers who believed that the values of equality, education, and inclusion should not just be championed but also made available to all—a dream that Sesame Street has carried forward for more than fifty years.

Contributors include: Sesame Street creator Joan Ganz Cooney, head writer Norman Stiles, lyricist and composer Christopher Cerf, cast members Roscoe Orman (Gordon), Sonia Manzano (Maria), Emilio Delgado (Luis), Bob McGrath (Bob), Caroll Spinney (Big Bird and Oscar), Brian Henson, and Sesame Street’s first female puppeteer Fran Brill.

About the authors:

Trevor Crafts is an award–winning producer whose works include Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street and Lantern City, based on his own BOOM! Studios comic-book series. He is the CEO of Macrocosm Entertainment and lives in Los Angeles, California.

David Attie was a fine art and commercial photographer whose work appeared in Time, Harper’s Bazaar, Playboy, and Newsweek during the course of his more than 30-year career. His relationship to Sesame Street dates back to 1970, when he photographed the second
season of the show on assignment for Amerika, a Russian-language magazine published by the US and distributed in the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

Michael Davis was a senior editor and family television columnist for TV Guide from 1998 to 2007. A Neiman Fellow, he has also worked for the Baltimore Sun and Chicago Sun-Times. He is the author of Street Gang: The Complete History of Sesame Street (Penguin, 2008).

The Unseen Photos of Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street will be released December 7, 2021 and is available to pre-order through Amazon
